Westvleteren has the smallest output of the Trappist breweries, with only a small part of their production going very far into the world.

Trying to avoid the cliché, but this really is like a lighter version of a 12. The palate is thinner, the liquorice and fruit notes lack the intensity. Very very good, but not as good as the 12.

Bottle from bartlebier enjoyed at home. Quite fresh. Best before date is 04.12.16. Pours brown redish color with a small beige head. Much carbonation in this one. Smells of honey fruits and toffee. Comes back in the taste. Got another bottle witch i will store a couple of years.

April 11, 2014. 330mL bottle at Town Crier. Reddish brown with a very small off-white head. Lovely aromas of raisins, toffee and dark honey. Similar flavours, with hints of spiciness. Quite lovely. I prefer this one over the 12.

Bottle @ home. Aroma: a little roasty sweet, a little yeast. Apperance: Brown as coke, cloudy, fluffy tan head. Taste: Round, mild sweetness, a little hay, ends in light bitterness. Overall: It’s a nice beer - but to me the fuss is not about the taste. Could never blindtest this as "my no. 1"

Three years old bottle. Colour is clearish brown, pale brown head. Aroma has raisins, (rye) malts, plume, cyrup. Compared to fresh bottle aroma has lost many fruity notes. Flavour has smooth honey, quite a lot of malts. Palate is well balanced with light/medium carbonation.

Flaske, smagt hos lars, kloster øl, God øl og smager dejligt, er i min verden overvurderet, men er stadigvæk god:-)

Reddish brown beer with a big blonde frothy head leaving lacing. Aromas of pear peelish Belgian yeast, sugary sweetness, malts, licorice and anise. Flavor has anise, licorice, toasted malts, dark fruits, raisin, herbs and caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel is quite full and quite heavily carbonated. Finish has a medium bite of bitterness and a longer finish with spiciness and sweet maltiness as well as alcohol warmth. Pouring in the yeast emphasizes the anise and licorice. A tasty Dark Belgian Strong Ale, almost as good as the mighty Westy XII.
