COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours a orange hue with a nice off white head. Aroma is citrus with orange, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Sweet maltiness aroma comes through as well. Excellent tasting IPA with a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Finishes with a nice grapefruit flavor on the tongue. The palate is smooth with the right amount of carbonation, not crisp but it doesn’t need to be. Somewhat sweet but hoppy IPA. An excellent choice for a nightcap beer.

The aroma is tangy with lots of fruit, like grapefruit and banana. The taste is sweet and strong with hops. Very well balanced West coast IPA.

Poured from tap into Chimay glass a nice amber with white head and lace. Aroma was grapefruit and a bit floral. Taste to me was a better balance between the hops and malt. It was grapefruit not doubt but not a bomb. Med body. Really liked this one, a winner for sure.

71 day old 12oz bottle to snifter. Crystal clear copper. White head. I wonder how fresh it needs to be to live up to the hype. Still good.

From a bottle. Pours orange with a thin white head, floral hop aroma, huge palate of hops with grapefruit punch that lingers. No hint of the alcohol, a great beer that is an excellent example of an American IPA.

Darn good ipa. worth every cent too, though they sure do add up on this one. nose is citrusy for sure. tastes just as so in addition to some lighter fruits. this brew doesnt molest you with a ton of ibu’s although very much prevalent in the hops department. goes down ultra smooth but crisp with not too much linger. gives a very profuse mouth feel that is very enjoyable. looks like we gotta winner folks!

Bomber from Andy--thanks! A citrusy west coast ipa with a good dose of orange flavor, pine. I found it a little thin and kind of sharp, but generally quite drinkable.

Found a bottle at the Carrefour in Sorocaba, Brazil of all places. The smell was pretty intoxicating. A deep tropical mix of mango, papaya, passion fruit. The pour was golden orange with a slight haze. Heavy bitterness up front like a danky pine then opens up with hints of apricot, peach and the previous tropical mix. Very balanced throughout and good as lacing from the fresh malt.

Medium amber body with powerful head. Nose has lots of citrus, but more varied than usual - notes of other tropical fruits like mango, maybe pineapple. Also some hints of the malt backbone. Taste is equally complex. Along with the tropical fruits there are hints of pine. Mouthfeel is generous with a tiny bit of cloy yet a dry finish. This beer opens up as it warms towards the bottom of the glass. It’s worth waiting to judge it until you’ve finished the glass - it lives up to the hype.

.3l bottle @ Haltiatar Pours clear yellow with low head. Aroma is citrus fruits, pine, exotic fruits, some herbs, apricot. Flavor is pine, exotic fruits, hops, resin and grape. Well balanced, soft mouthfeel. Swell.
