COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12°C (54°F) (Translation by Martinus)

bottle. very dark brown with thick beige head which lasts and laces . A beauty to behold. Rich sweet boozy aroma which is backed up by the taste - unctuous , sweet , toffee , caramel alcohol warmth underlying but not intruding . rich full mouthfeel medium carbonation . slides down well . A great exemple of the style .

330 ml bottle from LCBO. BB Nov 2018. Pour dark brown, reddish in the light. Minimal and short-lived off white head. Smells like deep sweet fruit esters, Plums, cherries, raisins, some brown sugar, some booze. Ditto for the taste. Juicy fruitiness. Allen’s apple juice on steroids. Some port-like qualities. Syrupy mouthfeel. Warming. Dessert in a glass. Very sweet but somehow not too sweet.

Ez egy fantasztikusan jó barna belga, ALE. Összeragadt a szám tőle, de felidézte az igazi sörpincék illatát, hangulatát.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with reddish highlights and an incredibly high, fine-grained, lacy, tan head. Nose is baking chocolate, smoke, dates, figs, Worcestershire sauce, and a touch of herbs (marjoram?). Sweet up front, with a definite boozy punch and roasty cafe au lait note; chocolate and raisin kicks in after. Reminds me of dark rum over vanilla ice cream or a good fruitcake (and yes, there are good fruitcakes). Confectionery. Finish is long, warm, and has some vanilla extract notes peeking out. Good beer as we slide towards winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Deep red color, small beige head. Aroma of ripe dark fruits, caramel, spices, banana, yeast. Taste is sweet with lightly bitter and spicy finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Very sweet, but quite enjoyable ale.

Opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry. Light fine carbonation. Very sweet malts, caramel. Candy fruits and sweet bubblegum ester. Little spice. Touch of ripe fruits. Light semi dry finish. Some alcohol heat and spice. Comes together well but it’s a fairly sweet beer.

Bottle (330 ml). Reddish brown with a small bubbly beige head and little lacing. Aroma is of chocolate, alcohol, vinous notes, light spiciness and dark fruits/plums. Taste is sweet but it’s mostly the alcohol that is (almost) cloying. There’s also plums, chocolate, light spiciness and raisins. Medium/full body. Moderate carbonation. A tad vinous & syrupy mouthfeel. Warming finish. Not the kind of beer that I like very much, but this isn’t bad. Tasty with a nice vinous aspect.

The one and only, original ’castle beer’ since 1989, modelled after Westvleteren 12 the way it tasted back then - that is, way too sweet. Anyway, this beer is a classic among Belgian abts (so incorrectly classified here) outside the trappist and abbey worlds. After having had this several times in the past twenty years, it is time for an objective analysis. I pour it into its own glass - a wide, firm and perhaps not very subtle chalice - in which it displays a light beige, crackling, thin but dense head which retains quite good in spite of its ABV but still all but disappears in the end; and a very dark wine-red colour which seemingly approaches black without being black and which remains clear even after adding the deposit (in other words: filtered). Aroma less strong than expected from this type of beer, impressions of overripe pear, brown sugar, maple syrup, candi syrup (which is probably actually used), chocolate liqueur, liquorice, caramel candy, raisins, bourbon, brown bread, chicken broth, molasses, coriander seed and a very faint hint of cooked broccoli. Creamy and full palate, sweet from the start with thick, syrupy candi sweetness, in a cloying and sickly way, candied fruits and strong liquorice, sugary and caramelly, medium carbo, thick but superficial caramelly malt sweetness, chocolate, satiating and slick, finishing with the same cloying, sickly, syrupy sweetness from the beginning, like the kind of chocolate sauce you would pour over a dame blanche, which the poor grassy hops can never win from - they are present, but in a David against Goliath kind of way; needless to say, a liqueur-like warming alcohol effect is also present. When swallowing this, I can almost feel the sticky syrup going down my throat. It’s still the same as it ever was: unrefined, boorish and way too sweet, to the extent that I almost came to hate it. Give me that Cuvée du Chateau version, but keep this syrup monster away from me. I was craving for something salted (meat or cheese) after finishing this... That being said, I am convinced it ages well - and then probably gets even sweeter when the last of the ’bittering’ hops, already weak in the beginning, fade away - so if you are into thick, syrupy, sweet ales, this is a must try. I also believe it goes quite well with the saltiness of a blue cheese. Tasting it without that kind if support, however, is unfair; I still hold a kind of grudge against beers which are uncompromisingly sweet, and I will now stay away from this forever. Historically speaking, though, I do imagine Westvleteren 12 ever having been this sweet. Thank God (almost litterally, since we’re talking trappist ales here) it has changed a lot in 25 years - wish this Kasteelbier had followed the same evolution.
