COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.

Bottle from 2006. A nose of chocolate, liquorish and sugars. Taste is of chocolate, liquorish, tar, coffee and vanilla. It’s powerful, a little bit acidic and really bitter. Finish is heavy: Salt, bitterness and a touch of alcohol. This brew is extremely powerful, yet balanced and enjoyable. Too bad this was my last bottle.

7oz XS. Definitely a unique tasting imperial. Dark and black as it should be. No head to mention and low carbonation. Very bitter. Good not great.

Draft at Smiling Chameleon. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Slight hints of cocoa on the nose. Some licorice on the tongue as well as some hop bitterness for balance. Finishes clean. Good example of style but goes down real easy.

Bottle shared at my 30:th birthday tasting on May 5 (30 år av Surt). Courtesy of Gnoff. 2007 vintage. Pours very dark reddish brown, almost black, with a frothy and creamy mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet with toasted malts, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, liquorice fudge, vanilla, wood and hints of brown sugar and dark honey. Taste is slightly sweet and bitter with pine, roasted malts, orange peal, salty liquorice, freshly cut grass, coffee and bitter cocoa powder. Mouthfeel is oily bitter, very tiny tart and medium to full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, sweetened coffee, bitter chocolate and hints of liquorice fudge.

Pours a two finger brown head that fades quickly to ring leaving traces lace. Black color, no highlights. Light-medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Chocolate and caramel nose, flavor is similar, chocolate, caramel and coffee. Burnt coffee finish. High ABV is hidden. $4.35 for a wussy 7oz bottle from Bert’s Better Beers Hooksett, NH. This is their XS RIS.

Aroma- chocolate, oatmeal, hops, some caramel Appearance- borderline black, thick pillowy white head, crazy lacing Taste- hints of chocolate and toffee followed up by an extreme hop bite Palate- medium-bodied, decent carbonation Overall- Just too hoppy of a stout for me. Takes away from the other potentially redeeming qualities of the beer. Was weary of this one and for good reason.

Aroma is very strong, almost harsh, with complex malts along with a vinous note. The flavor is coffee, chocolate, notes of whiskey, black liquorice and a strong maltiness with some vinous notes. Definitely a very good imperial stout although the extremely strong flavors were almost off-putting.

Bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a tan head. Aroma is of roasted malt, coffee, dark fruits, liquorice, charcoal and ashy notes and dark chocolate. Flavor follows the nose, at first its sweet with the dark chocolate and sugary notes, then roasted malts, liquorice, charcoal, ashy and burnt notes along with an soy sauce like character. The body is full with a creamy mouth feel. Overall a pretty solid Imperial Stout.

2009 so about 3 yrs in the bottle. Moderate body, nice dry stout. Seems unbalanced somehow...I can’t place what is missing or too much here. Bitter finish from hops not burnt malts.
