COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Malt beverage aged in oak bourbon barrels.
A hearty brew that is black as night with a strong roasted malt character and a full body. After its initial release in January 2010, our Imperial Stout was aged for a full year in Bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents hints vanilla and oak. This, combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for a smooth, wonderful taste experience. A hearty cellar beer. Very Limited Availability - 22oz Bottles and Draught. Black Gold was named one of "the best" barrel aged beers in the US by Men’s Journal and took home a silver medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® in the Wood and Barrel Aged Strong beer category).

Note: In 2011 went from 10.5% to 11.4%.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a small beige head that left no lacing. The aroma was sweet coconut, cocoa, vanilla and rum. The flavor was coconut, cocoa, anise, light caramel, rum and coffee. Medium length finish. Somewhat thin in body but silky. Nice.

Big thanks to Mike for this one! Pours black with a brown head. Smell: coffee, chocolate, bourbon, tobacco and vanilla. Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, licorice and some tobacco notes come through in the taste. Palate medium thick with a chocolate, vanilla and bourbon finish. Very tasty!

On draft, 2011 served in a tulip. Pitch black with a thick brown head, nice lacing on the glass. Rich molasses vanilla oak aroma. Chewy mouthfeel, stron favors of molasses, toffee, vanilla, bourbon and oak. Lingering alcohol and toffee favors. This is a massive, delicious beer to sip on.

22 oz. bottle, split many ways, pours black with a small ring of tan head. Nose of light oak, molasses, roasted malt and considerable booze. Flavour of bourbon, oak and vanilla upfront, followed by molasses and roasted malt that are nearly completely buried. Medium complexity, since the barrels have overtaken this. Slightly sour notes mixed with oak and booze on the finish. Very nice.

Got this in a trade with Douglas88. Big thanks. That being said, this beer really flopped. Hard. The nose was nothing but Jim Beam and wood. From there, the palate was extremely watery, thin, with just a touch of creaminess. The flavor has a creamy vanilla flavor to it, and some strong bourbon notes. Finishes almost like there is a shot of bourbon in my beer. There is no aftertaste. It just vanishes from your palate. Too much time in the barrel, there is just no beer to this. It’s okay, but nothing I’d spend money on. Oh well.

(almost) black beer with a small brown head. Very complex aroma, in which I find whisky/bourbon, cedar, vanilla, quite sweet, licorice. Taste is also complex with roasted malts, fruity (cherry, raspberry, almost red wine), a fruity sour as well, cedar, vanilla. Slightly salted in the backtaste. Good!

Black, muddy body with a brownish head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, liquorice: quite complex and well balanced. Moderately sweet, moderately bitter of chocolate, spices, dark fruit.

Bottle @ ZZT’11 #2: Small brown bubbles/lacing on top of a black beer. Smell whiskey, vanilla, sweets, light liquorice, oak and a light sourness. Taste light sour, liquorice, coffee, vanilla, roasted malts, oak, hints of whiskey and spices. Nice sour in the beginning turns into a good bitterness in the end. Coffee oak spicy aftertaste. Low carbo, soft mouthfeel, medium to fuller body and a watery light creamy texture. Guess it was a bit too watery in the beginning and a bit, just a bit, unbalanced. Still good though.
