COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

16 oz can - Floral hops aroma smacks you in the face. Hazy brown in color. Obviously a lot of malt to go along with the massive hops. Tastes quite bitter with a superb hops and malt blend. Not too much of either, or too much of both, which is just as good. This is a very interesting beer. I would have more.

UPDATED: MAY 28, 2012 Pours an amber with an off white head. Huge aroma. Strong in pine, grapefruit, orange, and pineapple, with a few malty undertones. Taste is very similar, but somehow this is even more powerful. More pine and grapefruit over the other impressions while being a bit peppery as well. But through all of this, the hops are overwhelming. Any hops lover will really appreciate this. This one is more medium bodied and is fairly easy to drink. Overall, this has all of the taste, aromas, and impressions of a hard hitting beer, yet is a bit on the lighter side in reality. Fantastic effort on this one. I couldn’t be happier with this.

No idea when this was canned, looks like the date stamper was down on this particular day. 16 oz tall boy into a tulip glass. As soon as I cracked the top I could smell tropical fruits! A - Dark amber body that’s almost bordering on red. Massive light khaki head forms and dies down to some spotty lacing and thick edging. Tons of coating on the wall as the beer goes down. Looks damn near perfect. S - Layer after layer of papaya, mango, peach, and grapefruit. Super tropical with a touch of pine and biscuity malt on the finish. I’m also getting a bit of dank resinous hops. T - Considering the 6.2% abv and 99 IBU’s, its actually rather tame and drinkable. Papaya and mango with a nice english biscuit finish. Light notes of pine and some herbal dankness intertwine with the fruit. Biter finish. Not as impressive as the aroma. M - Medium bodied and coating but fairly light in carbonation. O - Not a perfect AIPA, but one that I wish I had access to. Lots of nice tropical hop notes that go along with some faint herbal and piney ones. Surly knows how to make some awesome hoppy beers.

Poured into my ccb pint glass, reddish brown, half a finger head, hazy. Aroma of hops with malt in background. Taste follows the nose hops with little malt, no balance. Citrus from the hops is good just not great. Highly carbonated. It’s good just not great, after having abrasive(excellent) it’s hard to tell they are both from the same brewery.

16 oz can, hazy copper amber with small off white head. Didn’t take notes in the MSP airport but this IPA is a quality brew. Very nice, creamy, rich malt flavor without being too sweet. Plenty of hop flavor and bitterness to balance it out. I think this fresh from a newly tapped keg would be well into the 4’s rating.

Can-no date on bottom (how old is this thing?). Hmmm, well i have to start this review by saying that for what it is, this is a decent beer. however, i dont think i got the most fresh sample. How old is this can? No date on the bottom. Pours dark orange with a soapy off-white head. nose is of sweet hops, carmel malts and some metalic notes (earth). Doesnt come across to me being that punchy. flavors exhibhit the earthy hop flavors with some lite pine. 99ibu’s? Where? Seems more brittish than i was expecting. WIth that said, the beer is well crafted and very clean. I must find this beer more fresh. If this IS a fresh sample, than im very dissapointed with this beer.

Originally reviewed: 4/14/09. Poured into my pint glass. Pours a very deep dark amber with a huge off-white frothy head on top. It’s 10 minutes later and there’s still about a quarter inch resting on top. Decent sticky splattering on the glass edge. Huge scent profile of piney and citrusy hops. Very floral and sweet smelling. Very inviting this one is. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean. Carbonation level is spot on. Flavor is bitter right of the bat with a huge hop profile. As I go along though this gives way to a sweet malty presence full of caramel flavor. Drinkability is extremely high on this one. Probably the best representation of an IPA I’ve had to date.

Can. Pours a dark copper orange color with a beige head. Aroma is of grapefruit, orange, sweet pine, resin and caramel. The flavor follows the nose lost of sweet pine, resin, grapefruit, orange, herbal notes, toffee, caramel and a touch of peach. The body is medium with a dry mouth feel. Overall a pretty tasty IPA.

The definition of 'hops' I'm told. This beer was fantastic. Served in a glass, this beer's aroma and taste are both quite good and memorable. I now understand why people speak so well of Surly brews. Definitely give it a try if you have the chance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a murky burnt Orange color with a nice dense off-white head. Outstanding head retention, which leads to good lacing. Sweet citrus aromas with a hint of spruce. Hops control the palate with bitter citrus flavors with some evergreen tones. The sweet malts balance out the bitterness perfectly. Mild carbonation with a smooth and clean backbone. Very complex palate for an IPA. Nice and crisp with a dry finish. Very nice drinking IPA. Surly Is making amazing beer....and in cans no less!

pours a very dark copper, with a fast dissipating head. Fruity, floral, piney and grassy hop aroma. Hop sediment In the beer which I love. Interesting malt character to this beer. Big time Backend hops with some pineyness. Good, but not great.
