4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Merrill (77) - Chicago, USA - FEB 26, 2009
Bomber cellared for four months. Loarge roast-coffee aroma rather full-bodied without thin edges. Dark caramel in this not-quite black beer. Dark ,dark-red around the edges. Strongly rich mocha-coffee roast with charcoal and primeval forest. Broiled squash with butter comes to mind - roasted in a camp fire. This beer is very sophisticated in its delivery of hops with a wide range of mid flavor and strong bittering. More flavors come through as you drink this malt party. Oak and cedar... Short finish for such a great beer.

Okay! First impy. Only other stout I’ve had in any form is Guinness Extra, so keep in mind that this review is by a style rookie. I understand Jah-va is not considered very top of the line for the style itself, but it’s still pretty highly rated - more highly rated than a lot of my favorite IPAs, APAs, and Belgians - so curious to see what this style is like and to see what all the hubbub is about. Okay. Pours total black. Head is ample, but fades pretty quick, retaining a tiny bit and leaving some lacing. Smells roasty, chocolatey, milky, though not strong. Taste - good mix of coffee, chocolate, malt, nuttiness, roastiness, some bitterness. Booze hits pretty strong as well, not surprisingly. This is pretty good and interesting. Am I a convert to this revered style, and will I now prefer it to my revered pale ales and Belgians? No, but I will not rule out trying some other impy stouts in the future. I did enjoy this.

Very interesting stout. Has coffee in the name, but it is not so evident in the beer, which also has notes of chocolate, toffe, and caramel. Hops are right in the target.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Borresteijn (2757) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - MAY 17, 2012
On tap at Beer Temple. Almost black, beige head. Aroma of sweet rye, bread, light coffee with sugar, quite sweet. Flavour is rather sweet as well, rye, sugar, chocolate, coffee with sugar and milk, light roast. Medium bodied. Too sweet imo, more like a baltic porter/bock.

Draft served in a tulip. Thick creamy head fills the top of the glass. Aroma is mostly coffee, but not overpowering. Taste is roasted malt, some burnt sugar, alcohol, and deliciousness. Aftertaste is mostly alcohol. Great beer.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown almost black color. Big tan creamy brown head. Thick almost syrup like. Aroma was roasted malts, milk chocolate and coffee. Flavor was burnt, with plenty of coffee, tofee and some alcohol. Very thick and heavy. Well above average.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Hermod (1687) - Vantaa, FINLAND - MAY 9, 2012
Bottle from Brewdog shop. Poured black color with a thin brown head. Aroma has strong roastedness, coffee, almonds and molasses. Flavor has roasted malt, hops, sweet strong coffee, ash and chocolate. Lingering, lovely strong coffee finish. Dry. Oily mouthfeel, full bodied. Enjoyable, great coffee IS.
4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 SPDickerman (424) - Texas, USA - MAY 6, 2012
Pours pitch black with small brown fizz. Smells strongly of coffee and espresso. Taste follows the nose, with hints of a sweetened iced coffee as well. Full-bodied with a thick, slick texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Southern Tier Jah-va Imperial Coffee Stout finishes with a solid coffee bitterness.
4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 maxwelldeux (320) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - MAY 2, 2012
Pours very dark with minimal head. Has some wonderful coffee notes to the aroma - all the best parts of an espresso and stout combined. Nice coffee flavor comes through with some slight hints of sweetness. It’s a bit heavy on the palate and very rich.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 brigg (416) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 1, 2012
(bottle) Black body with a tiny, disappearing brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dirt, and noticeable hops. Full bodied, creamy, velvety texture; no real carbonation. Flavor is smooth: rich caramel malt, strong sweetness, but hops are there too. Warming alcohol finish. Coffee is strong in the flavor, but it stays smooth.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 crossovert (2781) - Wisconsin, USA - APR 30, 2012
650ml bottle.
It pours a deep blackish brown with a creamy mocha tan head.
It has some nice hoppy scents and a good imperial stout base. Thick rich black malts with some cocoa and caramel. The coffee lingers over with some bitter earthiness and some fruit.
The mouthfeel is thick but with prickling carbonation. This time coffee is more dominant. Lots of burnt flavors and some slightly tartish fruitiness.
It is decent but nothing mind blowing.
