2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
50 cl bottle.
Pours pitch black color with a small beige head. Aroma of dry chocolate, roasted malts, caramel notes, some cocoa and subtle coffee notes. Flavor of mild chocolate, dark fruity notes and some malts. Very watery and thin, and thatís all it takes to bring the score down. A big disappointment.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle on the Calmac ferry to Islay. It pours black with a thick beige head. The nose is roasted malt, ash, earth, coffee grinds and a hint of smoke in the background. The taste is roasted malt, well-done toast, earth, pepper, liquorice, cola, tar and a tour of sourness with a crisp, dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Robust and well balanced. Islay Ales best beer most probably.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Looks good on the pour: a deep, near opaque burgundy colour with an initially large & rocky but slowly disappearing light tan head. Goes downhill from there on in. I donít think itís in top form. Cherry & dark berries to the fore on the nose. More cherry & raspberry coming through on the tongue with touches of liquorice & minor roasty, coffee malt tones. Light to medium body, soft to medium carbonation finishing with a short & relatively soft bitterness though the tanginess lingers on. Although I suspect itís infected or along those lines itís not undrinkable & drinks somewhat like a muted sour.
