COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition. This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus. This beer, as all our beers, is 100 % natural, with no preservatives, no adjuncts and no chemicals. We bottle it in bottles of 75 cl and closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. Every year the public is invited to assist to the brewing process.
Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

2012 from LCBO. 0.75l bottle all to myself. Poured in a tulip. Appearance: Transparent dark orange, fine frothy beige head, some visible carbonation. Aroma: Caramel, banana, hints of grapes, roasted chestnuts, chocolate. Palate: thick bodied, fizzy, smooth, kinda syrupy. Taste: super sweet start, has more of a savoury finish. Nice complex flavour here.

Brown body, light brown head. Aroma has cola, bread and chocolate and still noble hops comes through. Alcohol is present. Belgian yeast, which in this case is one of the best strains. Carolus has such wonderful charasteristics. Flavour is without alcohol, but has roastiness and raisins with really nice dark bready malt. Huge beer.

Aroma: malty, sweet, a bit roasted plums, cherries, little cacao, coca-cola color: very dark brown, almost black, clear medium body, very smooth taste, a bit alcohol, but not very agressive, its intense sweet, like Porto-wine nice to taste something COMPLETLY different than ipa, or beer in general (not belgian way ;) )

Very dark brown oily colour with redish. Aroma of dark chocolate, hops, malts, caramel, raisins, dark fruits, little presence of vanilla. the same is the taste. Alcohol is notable but is also very well hidden. Overall Very good beer.

Bottle shared by jheath99. Pours dark brown with beige head. Aroma is bready and cookie malts, dark fruit notes, faint chocolate, and faint oak. Flavor is smooth dark fruits, chewy malt profile, light vanilla sweetness, and faint woody notes. Medium body.

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy chestnut brown with a one finger tan head. It smells amazing. I can say with sincerity that I’ve never smelled a beer like this before. Molasses, raisin, serious red wine notes, alcohol, hazelnut, walnut, brandy, black licorice, and the "original" flavour of Ricola. As for taste, sweet with heavy raisin notes, LBV port, black licorice, light hazelnut, a light cinnamon note and some definite alcohol that turns into very surprising Dutch style licorice heavy flavours, port, and some dried fruit in the finish. This beer is a beast. Good, too damn good.

Drank the 2013 edition yesterday, bought few years back at the brewery. Must say that the taste only got better. Still a top beer!

28.5.2014. Aroma of brown sugar, caramel, plums, dark fruits, fig, malts and warmth of alcohol. Taste is sweet, still plums and brown sugar, dark fruits, malts, some raisin. Quite soft. Great Belgian strong ale.

2012 vintage for my 100th rating. Pours dark brown body with a tint of auburn. Loose tan head that dissipates rather quickly leaving a decent amount of sticky patches of foam. Scents of dark fruits, sweet breads, molasses, and candied nuts. Thick, sweet aroma laced with vanilla, some brandy qualities are also present. Taste is of raisins, ripe apples, toffee, and sweet malts. Alcohol is hidden well. Somewhat dry, tart finish. Fantastic beer, very drinkable.
