Vishnu’s Vice occupies the clear growler and makes it glow orange. When poured into a pint glass there’s no difference. The body has a slight haze to it and the carbonation appears almost still with only a couple rising bubbles here and there. The off white head grew to two fingers on the pour and left some solid lacing on its way down the glass. This is a good looking IPA.
The nose on this IPA is outstanding! It’s loaded with tropical fruitiness including bitter grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and papaya all in that order from most to least. The malt profile is sugary cake like with a drizzle of caramel. My description of the malt doesn’t matter a whole lot though because this IPA is 100% hop driven and those hops are magical. There’s an alcohol so clean in the aroma the only way I know it’s there is the drying sensation in my nose when I take a whiff.
The flavor follows the aroma very closely. A tropical fruitiness drips over every taste bud while the bitter pink grapefruit takes center stage. All the complex hoppiness fits into its own special little niche and contributes to the grapefruit bitterness perfectly. The malt has just enough presence to keep the hops from running roughshod, but the hops are in charge without a doubt. The depth of flavor in this IPA really is something else.
The body of Vishnu’s Vice is right down the center of the spectrum. The carbonation that doesn’t look present is there enough to add a smooth creaminess to the body but keep it moving fast enough to not get stale. The bitterness grows and grows the more I drink until my entire mouth is numb with hoppy goodness.
This IPA is toeing the line of being an IIPA. An argument could go either way as to what it really is but whatever it may be it is going down incredibly easy. These couple glasses are a sheer joy to drink.
I’ve had quite a few of the offerings from Flossmoor including most of the IPAs they’ve had on tap and Vishnu’s Vice is one of their best IPAs and one of their best overall beers period. I actually tried this side by side against Surly Furious at the brewpub today and this was the better IPA hands down; and I love me some Furious. This is a must try if you’re in the area.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 vyvvy (2920) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - MAY 1, 2011
Wasn’t sure which IPA this was I’m drinking, but the bottle I have matches this one, so I guess it goes here. Pours amber orange with a nice soapy off-white head. The aroma is pretty glorious with lots of hop character that includes funky Simcoe green onion and tropical traits along with some citrus, grapefruit, pine and fruitiness. There is also a solid caramel backing. Medium body that’s fairly smooth with some semi-sharp carbonation coming out at the end. The flavor starts much less funked that the aroma, but still quite hoppy. It is a smooth hoppiness that has a nice balance with the malt. The flavor starts off with a distinct piny & dry grapefuite traits up front and the subdued funkiness and spicy hoppiness there as well. It has a nice lightly toasty caramel malt in there that provide great balance. This seems bigger than an IPA, but smaller than an IIPA ~ it’s in just the right place. Great beer.

Reviewed from notes. I believe this bottle was from Masterski. Thanks, Alex.
Pours a light copper color with a single-finger white head that dissolves a bit quickly. Nose brings forward some strong line and citrus. A bit of pale malt backing, but not much. The hops are more subtle in the flavor with a pretty good backing bitterness for a nice dry feel. Drinkability is nice. A nice refreshing IPA.

Bomber poured into a tulip. Pours a cloudy amber gold with little head. Huge citrus hop aromas. Lot of hops dominate the taste. Not as much malt to balance as much as I’d like. Body medium to heavy. Overall a good IPA.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Dickinsonbeer (5076) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 7, 2011
Bomber. Pours a lighter copper and a bit more clear than their other DIPAs. Aroma is citrus cascade, lemon, orange peel, light mineral, leafy slight catty, mango hops over a light cara and crackery malt base- light sweetness. Flavor is mango, sharp citrus, flat orange soda, slight sweetness, orange lemon and grass with a less than clean bitter finish- seemed just a bit lackluster compared to the others.

Pours a brown yellow orange with one finger of offwhite head. From the nose I would say this was either older or got some light/heat. Oxidized and a tad vegetal, bready with some herbal hops. Flavor is similar with an astringent bitterness. Porquoi?

Green waxed bottle bought in 2010. Cloudy amber with a medium off-white head and ring lacing. Aroma of citrus, woodsy hops and deep malt. Also some floral and herbal hops, spice and hot dogs. Taste is very resinous with floral and citrusy hops and a fair amount of sweeter malt to keep things in check. Moderate bitter finish.

golden red with large white head. citrus and herbal hops to the nose. firm bitterness before the above mentioned hop characters that come through in glowing fragments of taste before some low crystal malt and a nice dry finish. a very nice version, cross between a dry west coast and a maltier east coast version

A friend brought me this bottle back from his most recent trip to Chicago. When it was bottled, I dont know, but it was opened 10/13, about two months after I got it. Kept refrigerated and away from any kind of light since.
Also I clicked the category for the dark green wax, because thats what i have, but the picture shows red, so i dont know for sure if its the right one, let me know if its not.
aroma: very slight cereal, light caramel, wonderful hop bouquet, not as citrusy as I thought it would be, very nice damp pine forest smells, mixed with some overripe stone fruit. Very minor solventy sweet smell. Similar to hot alcohol esters but not quite. I think it blends well with the aroma
appearance: bright light copper color, thin white head
taste: delicious. great blend of hops, hitting me a slightly sweet aftertaste. This is a dry beer, and the sweetness, doesnt come off as malty but slightly tropical. Not much rough bitterness, but pure hop flavor.
again, delicious.
palate: great on the palate. dry, somewhat puckering. seems like light to medium carbonation enhanced by hop bitterness. The hop flavor lingers, but not in an imposing way.
Overall: f-ing awesome. Im a west coast ipa fan, and this has that hopping, but still with a backbone to keep you in the seat. Would get it many more times if i could
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 riversideAK (4566) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - OCT 5, 2010
Citrus, toast, floral hops, light bread and dough on the nose. Pours hazy golden with nice lace and head. The flavor has notes of grapefruit, orange, tangerine, floral hops, bread, toasted malts, a hint of sugar. Hop bitterness fades a bit in the finish, but the flavor is still solid. Still damn good, apparently this is a bit old, but damn, it tastes really good. An interesting light sugar note adds to the malt/sweetness for balance. The hops are still there and flavorful. I can only imagine this one fresh, hopefully they do this one again so I can trade for a few more.
