4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 efrumtheidiot (190) - USA - JAN 7, 2009
pours a deep, dark brownish black with a quickly dissipating tan head. aroma is roasty coffee malt with dark chocolate undertones. some woody, piney hops. taste is coffee malt followed by a wave of sweet chocolate and then a long bitter finish. initial taste does have a bit of a hop character. smooth, viscous mouthfeel with mild carbonation. full-bodied. alcohol blended in very nicely; it just peeks through with some warming on the finish. nicely rounded and very pleasant; not one of those crazy over the top punch-you-in-the-face imperial stouts that are becoming more and more common. very nice. will buy again.

Fantastic imperial stout. Rich, malty, lots of chocolate and coffee. A nice hop kick. Not as massive as some, but a wonderful treat.

Purchased 6 pack from Beverage Mart- Acworth, GA. Served in standard pint glass. Appearance is typical stout black with small khaki head. Heavy floral aroma with a tad of black licorice. Slightly spicy flavor profile with a tad of bitter black coffee. Close your eyes and take a sip of this and you would swear it’s an IPA.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Rangi (117) - NEW ZEALAND - MAY 16, 2012
Black pour with minimal head that disappeared quickly. Interesting combonation of flavours and aromas. Red wine and floral aroma dominate with an nice well balanced bitterness cutting through the aroma followed by a nice warmness bought on for sure by the high abv. Aroma tastes harsh and bitter at first but slowly mellows as time goes on making way for a very pleasant beverage.

Bottle at home, from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. This rate should put me in the Top 50 Canadian Raters, so hurray for meaningless statistics! Pours inky deep black, 1-finger highly persistent pale tan head, exceptional lacing. Nose is spicy with grapefruit hops, perfume, delicate roast, shaved sandalwood, black licorice, and quince. Flavours of dry roast, big grapefruit hops, light soap, some heat from the alcohol, nice coffee notes, ashy and dry through the finish. I’m as overwhelmed with this as I was underwhelmed by the Dark Intrigue.

thick roasted black pour, with a finger and a Half of tan head. Boozy roasted flavor. Lots of roasty flavor. Some finishing hop bitterness. Very drinkable for its ABV

Initial smell isn’t that potent actually other than a little coffee bean. It picks up a bit of a dank musk as the beer warms up though. Pours black syrupy with brown foam, great lace patterns. Follow through has subtle hints of anise. mocha chocolate and coffee. Quite a bitter aftertaste. Thick palate as one would hope with any imp stout. Pulled a sly trick at Wegman’s in NIagara and slipped this one into a craft-your-own-sixer. Now I’m reaping the rewards.
