Finally……! Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.

0,375l bottle as gift from Denmark. Beautiful reddish black color, medium, creamy, brown head. Delicious, sweet odor, not offensive, but pleasant. Sweet, malty, alcoholly and surprisingly hoppy aroma. A lot of interesting flavours in perfect mixture. It’s so complex, that it’s difficult to describe. Coffee, chocolate malty flavours at the beginning, followed by herbal, grassy and a bit resiny hops. The alcohol is not hidden, but it doesn’t desturb! It’s definitely one of the best beer aroma I’ve ever tasted! Intensive sweet taste with a little bitterness. Full bodied with creamy, oily texture and pleasant carbonation. Long, roasted malty finish with some hoppy flavour too. It’s a fantastic beer. It has a lot of ingredients and they makes the beer this complex and deficious. The harsh roasted malty and hoppy flavours are moderated by the honey and the vanilla. The harmony is perfect between the ingredients. It’s one of the best beer I’ve ever tasted.

Black color, light brown head. Roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, dried fruit, licorice, alcohol, hint of vanilla. Roasted malt taste, espresso coffee, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, hints of alcohol and wood, sour note, dry finish. Full body, average to soft carbonation, warming alcohol. The serving temperature is essential, this should definitely not be served cold. Personal stats: Rating #400

Bottle pour opaque black with thick tan head. Nose sweet malt, milk chocolate, coffee, cherry, and hint of alcohol. Taste starts with more dark fruit flavors then the chocolate and coffee. Mid palate bounces between bitterness from the hops and chocolate flavors with alcohol. Nice interplay between sweet and bitter. Light roast on the finish. Syrupy mouth feel.

The strong alcohol smell & taste spoil this beer for me. I think Mik has become overly ambitious with this beer trying to produce an exceptionally strong beer rather than a smooth, quaffable beverage an Imperial Russian Stout should be - disappointing. Rated by BrewTom

Backlog rating. Bottle from Grand Cru, Rimini. It pours a.deep dark brown color with a large mocha colored head. Aroma is very bold and complex, with grinded coffee beans, dark chocolate, caramel malts, sweet toffee, boozy kick, vanilla pod, cedar wood, liqueur. Taste is again really sweet and complex with sugar syrup, cognac, vanilla, cocoa, licorice, Full bodied with sticky mouthfeel and good carbonation. Finish is slightly more dry with roasted malts and alcoholic bitterness and stringency. Overall, big and bold in flavours but really sweet

37,5 cl teku. Pours a beautiful, abundant and dense brown/very dark head; black as hell. Smells sweet roated, with very nice chocolate/cocoa notes, vanilla, chestnut/dried fruit, wood, Hops; quite like anything I’ve smelled. Tastes top quality roastiness, malty, chocolatey, caramel, espresso; --like in the best IS bitter and sweet notes become almost a unique thing--. Obviously flavour goes towards bitter at the end, but not as much as other IS, I would say more than medium bitterness: it’s there but it’s very balanced out by other flavours. Some umami fermented/soy like notes come also through; got also some sour hints as soon as you take the sip. Toasted, licoricy/coffee and quite clean, overall finish. Full bodied, oily texture, not that soft carbonation as you would imagine, mildly long finish leaves the palate quite clean. Apart from the fact that your body temparture quite increases, you wouldnt tell it’s 13% vol, fairly nice drinkability, awesome aroma: complex and smooth. Dunno if would buy again, probable, but man that was NICE

Sampled at the Cardinal, Stavanger. Rating based on my notes taken at the time. A very dark, very powerful and very characterful beer. There are aromas of coffee and roasted barley. Quite a sour hit when initially tasted, with some vegetal overtones. Strong espresso coffee tastes and other roasted flavours. Also tastes of vanilla, and, slightly strangely, hints of pears and paprika. A complex and fascinating beer.
