Finally……! Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.

19.11.12. Bottle. BBE has passed. Poured at room temperature (has not been in the fridge). No foam. Pitch black beer. Aroma is vanilla, dark sugar, some alcohol. Flavor is a noticeable hops, coffee, sweetness. Mouthfeel is smooth and sticky, a bit like soy sauce. Warming finish; sweet and bitter, long. Fantastic beer which I recommend to be sipped at room temperature.

Marstonlad (698) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 20, 2016
Bottle from Alko Sello, Espoo. Pours black with a little brownish head that leaves some lacing. The aroma displays various attributes: heavily roasty maltiness is the backbone that supports elements like strong coffee, salted licorice and a touch of vanilla - very rich. Taste offers initially fairly dry and very roasty maltiness that starts quickly to bend towards hoppier regions. The finish is heavily bitter; in fact, nearly everything in this beer is heavy. Flavours include rye bread, espresso and licorice initially, later also some pine and perhaps a faint touch of plum. Alcohol hides behind everything that the malts and hops are able to come up with. The palate is full-bodied and smooth, low in carbonation. Intense, even a bit aggressive - but also very good.

Wait a minute. This is a stout, right? Looks like one - deep black, light brown head. Smells like one - no, wait, it doesn’t, there’s a big hop blast, new world varieties, with lime, lychee, gooseberry, amidst the chocolate and coffee. So it’s fresh, and the palette is light for a 13.1% beer. Stupidly light. This could be a black IPA. Flavour our starts with fruit too - lime, grapefruit, gooseberry - then the chocolate follows. Ridiculously good.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a nutty brown/tan head. Aroma of honey and vanilla. Taste is slightly bitter of hops, with roast flavours/ coffee and some chocolate/honey-like sweetness.

375 ml bottle purchased from The Wine and Cheese Place in 2010 or 2011. Opened blindly alongside all other variants. Pours a deep, nearly opaque dark brown with minimal tan head that settles into a ring. This one has rich notes of chocolate, caramel, roast, burnt sugar, molasses, and an ash that seems a bit like charred wood. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, smooth, rich mouthfeel. My guess was bourbon; the charred oak note threw me. This was the regular one.

Draft. Pitch black beer with a thick dark brown, almost black head. Aroma of herbs, roasted notes of chocolate and coffee, leather and some vanilla(?). Flavour is full off coffee, chocolate, roasted herbs, soy sauce, heavy hops and a lot of alcohol which makes all the flavour turn in my mouth. It’s an explosion of flavours including coffee, hops and heavy alcohol (resembling something like the cheapest vodka you can find), which is too much for me to handle. Unbalanced. Undrinkable.

Turboninja (433) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 6, 2016
Bottle@home, from Alko Anttila, Tampere, Finland. Strong slightly sour aroma with syrup, honey, licorice and alcohol. Pitch black color with small light beige head. Strong, balanced taste dominated by honey and dark fruits like plum, some roasted malts, coffee, licorice and alcohol coming slightly trough. Wide taste spectrum and long aftertaste with roasted malts and dark fruits. Medium body with medium/light carbonation. Overall, high quality, complex product with very distinctive twist. Like a combination of IS and imperial dark IPA. Way too light mouth feel for this percentage.

Bottle. Thank you Ian. Black with an offwhite head. Aroma of alcohol, hops, vanilla. Taste light sweet, moderate bitter, alcohol, bitter hops, hint of roasted malts. Expected more.

13%ABV. Imperial Stout. Tapped out black. 40ºSRM. Nose has some nice roasty aromas. Some stone fruit aromas, plums. The thick humid funk of curing tobacco aroma. Mouthfeel is soapy. The palate is thick and sweet, much more so that the Warpig which I just had. Honey, syrup, molasses, brown sugar, honeyed dates and a thick medicinal funk like liquid licorice. Finish is alcoholic and thick and so very very nice with all kinds of rich, dark, fruity, wild black bee honey, smokey, umami, alcoholic, mineral, woody, medicinal flavors that remind you that Mikkeller loves you! Goes on Favorites List!

Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, brown sugar in aroma. Pours black with huge tan head. Taste is medium sweet with coffee, vanilla, mead, liqueur, chocolate and molasses. Finish is medium bitter, alcohol warms a throat. Overall very good, uncompromising Impy.

Almost no head. Coffee foam. Black with a hint of brown color. Smell alcohol, roast, wine and sour (close to vinegar). Lots of alcohol and some weird sour spike in the taste. Roast finish.
