VINTAGE 2008 This one pours a nice, deep, black. Just like it should be, with a name like The Abyss. Medium hard pour produces a two-finger head of dark cappucino colored foam. Retention is great and the lacing is excellent. Fully formed, solid and very sticky. Nice. Big dark roasted barley maltiness. The oak comes through nicely, mixing with a hint of alcohol, giving a hint of bourbon-like qualities. Nice hint of dark molasses. Good dark coffee notes blend with hints of dark chocolate, bringing me back to cappucino comparisons. Light vanilla notes. Huge presence of dark roasted malts. Big dark coffee profile. Nice vanilla sweetness, along with molasses, bringing balance. Nice presence of oak. A light touch of smokiness. Very mild notes of dark fruitiness. Hops are in there, but extremely well balanced with the rich maltiness. Man, this tastes wonderful. This is exceptionally smooth and creamy. Like silk across your pallette. The low level of carbonation sereves this brew very well. Despite how big, thick and rich this one is, it is very drinkable. The beautiful level of balance make this one so enjoyable and easy to consume. The 11%ABV is so well blended into the mix, as to be hardly noticable. Just a slight warming effect. This is exceptional. Believe the hype!

Bottle at Beechner Blind Beer Bash. This one seemed to be a little more fruit forward than I was imagining it would be. Notes of cherry dominated the nose with a subtle chocolate background with some vanilla. Taste was just as fruity with a light stickiness and sweetness, but never evolved into much chocolate. Overall enjoyable, but something just seemed a bit too fruity.

A smooth, dark khaki head falls to a resilient cap with several mounds of large bubbles over a black body with minuscule fiery amber highlights

Aromas bring to mind some of the negative components of aged american imperial stout with all the burly, sour dark notes Iíve grown to recognize from the style at this age. The molasses and cherry bark are holding the back end together to offer a sweet cream and chocolate finish, but this is generally bad. Citrus rind and charred solvents balanced by oak barrels on a creamy, silky smooth, coating medium plus body.

I held onto about 4oz of 2013 Boulevard Imperial Stout to compare the more blended versions of this barrel aged imperial stout tasting. Good lord, the Boulevard tastes like chocolate cherry whiskey compared to this $15 bomber of let down. One of the most overrated beers Iíve ever had.

The problem I have with all aged hoppy stouts is the intensely harsh, overly abrasive citrus bitterness moving directly into coffee and dark chocolate with almost no blending agent. This dynamic makes for poor flavor, bringing aromas of cow shit to mind (having grown up around a cow farm).

2010 bottle. Oily pitch black colour, dark brown foam. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts with sweet notes from chocolate and molasses. Very good but I was expecting more, maybe too old?

Part of a four year vertical. Big thanks to phatdog1 for putting this together!! For the sake of this review I am only reviewing the 2013. With a best after date of 08/16/14. Pitch black color with lasting mocha colored head. Aroma of licorice, coffee, and ash.

Flavor is really damn nice. Well hidden all goal under coffee, molasses, tobacco leaves and having a lingering licorice finish. After 3 oz. I also picked out a berry hint with oak. Oak is a light note as well as a light red wine hint. Body is creamy and full and what I look for in an imperial stout. Unreal stout thatís gets better with age, exceptional with a little bit of age. A year and half age is about peak. Fantastic

shared a 2012 bomber with 2 friends. poured dark black with a nice small mocha coloured head. a lot of dark roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate, vanilla, fruits, hints of bourbon, licorice notice. wow this is not your every day stout. very unique! what a complex taste, ton of roasted malts combined with dark chocolate, bitter espresso beans, vanilla, dark fruits, bourbon tones, ash, tobacco, caramel, after the first powerfull layer you can taste the wine barrels at the aftertaste. full bodied creamy mouthfeel. with some warm hints of the alcohol. very unique beer! loved it!

22oz bottle (2013 reserve) with a best after date of 8/16/2014.

Appearance: Black and opaque with a tan head. Pours thick out of the bottle.

Aroma: Chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, molasses, licorice, oak, figs, raisins, tobacco and a little wine character.

Taste: Dark chocolate, silky vanilla, black coffee, sweet molasses, figs, some bourbon, licorice and a little smokiness.

Palate: Medium-full bodied, very smooth, light carbonation and finishes with dark chocolate.

Overall: Great imperial stout. The licorice and wine comes out as the beer warms and provides a character rare in other stouts. Fantastic beer all around.

Very dark brown pour, brown head. Wonderful aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and smoked meat. Amazing huge flavor: chocolate, quite roasty with a hint of smoke. Super smooth. Absolutely fantastic.
