UPDATED: APR 7, 2010 2005 Bottle shared w/ Chris & Simon. The type of beer you crack open, hold to your nose, smile, then laugh...don’t get much better than this. I really wanted to objectively "rate" this ... Very few beers that I’ve come across can compare. So rich, so decadent, so "WOW!". This is just about perfect for my taste ... that deep, dark, caramel - raisin - choco - fig - amazing wood combo ... smoothed out with a ridiculous velvety mouthfeel...a gum massage. Sweet, but in an amazing way ... that powerful sweet that stays dry. If there was ever a beer that overwhelmed the taste buds with the smallest of sips, this is it. Amazing how well this has held up. Slight oxidation, but no where near going far south. Hopefully we meet again

Wow! This is good. Pours a deep dark brown with very little carb/head. Smells and tastes of nice smooth toasted notes...really really smooth. Has a nice sweet bourbon finish. It is very very rich. The 13.5 % alcohol is covered by how rich with flavor this ale is!

Bottle. Pours red brown with no head. Moderately dark. Aroma is strong melted galaxy chocolate with hints of rum. Flavour echos the aroma with strong chocolate. Milk and toffee also. Sticky with a longstanding sweetness. Very smooth with a subtle spice. Excellent beer.

Pour opaque dark brown/black, with a very small tan head. Aroma is packed of ripe dark fruits, raisin, caramel, slight bread, figs, toffee, fudge, brown sugar, molasses, wood and slight bourbon. Taste is quite sweet, with some slight bitter notes at the end. Real oily body, slight watery though, with a flat carbonation. Suits this beer very well.

A - Black with no head. No lace as I drink. S - Bourbon, chocolate, fig, date, Caramel malt, dust. T - Same as the nose. Good, but a tad too much for me personally. P - Sits heavy on the palate. O - A well executed beer, but a bit "big" for me. I’ll look to try this one again in the future.

Thanks to chpueblo22 for getting me this! 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a deep, dark reddish brown with a nice, creamy tan head. Beautiful lacing. Really looks nice. Aroma is very sweet and very boozy! Vanilla, bourbon, toffee, figs, raisin, and brown sugar. Taste is sweet as well; brown sugar, vanilla, fig, dark fruit, bourbon. You’d think at 13.5% that the alcohol would be really present, but it’s masked very well. Body is big, mouthfeel is thick, and there’s a nice, lingering bourbon finish. Overall, reminds me a lot of Abacus, but sweeter. As far as old ales go, it’s a little too sweet for me. Definitely a slow sipper, but I enjoyed it, and it lives up to its claim! Glad I got to try it

Flat pour, no lace. Seriously ugly, murky brown color, nasty lookin brew. Nose of plums, alcohol, whisky and faint licorice. Body is med/full, coating on the palate, no carbonation, lifeless. Lotsa boozy flavors, whisky and alcohol with some dark fruit notes of plum, raisin and a hint of chocolate and caramel. Sweet, warming, boozy finish. Did not age too gracefully i,d say. Props to weisguy for a shot at this legend.

light brown with minimal head. huge flavor mix. fruit, caramel, bourbon, wood. somehow this isn’t a complete mess and it all meshes into a very tasty beer. you won’t mistake this for a low abv beer, but alcohol is pretty well hidden.

Poured from 12oz bottle to brandy snifter. 2011 vintage: Poured like a sun brewed sweet tea with a beige head that swells briefly after a rigorous pour, only to subside back out to a thin ring that will go on to provide distinct lacing. Sexy legs follow shortly after. The bourbon barrel is the dominant player in the nostrils. Bits of graham cracker, smokey wood, caramel and toffee malts, figs and raisin, burnt sugar, more bourbon. The balance of all these flavors really overshadow the massive ABV. Wow. Very, very tasty stuff. Like a liquified boozy s’more. Chocolate, raisin, vanilla, bourbon, bourbon, toffee, bourbon, charred wood, molasses, coffee, bourbon. This stuff rocks. Damn, shorty.

2010 Vintage. Enjoyed in a Hill Farmstead Glass at 45 Degrees F.

A - Dark brown. Almost plum or blueberry appearance when held against the light. Absolutely no head and fantastic alcohol runners on the glass swirl.

S - bourbon, oak and smoked malts.

T - Huge tobacco taste, licorice, hints of vanilla, bourbon, oak, roasted malts.

M - No carbonation at all, big body, dry and lingering bits of bourbon

O - I keep trying Old ales and keep being very disappointed with them. This was no exception to that rule. Too boozy, to must musty like eating the dust on an old leather bound dictionary that hasn’t been touched for a decade. It’s like spending the day in a morgue. Just very bad taste in my mouth...and unfortunately...drain pour on the last half.

2010. Thanks pete! Huge Beer. Apricot, candy floss, bourbon, whisky, tar and smoke on the nose. Rich taste - Raisins, bourbon, ash, candi sugar. Not a long finish. Hides 13.5 well, although alcool heat present as it warms.Very good, just missing the length and depth of the great BWs and OAs.
