Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition.

330 ml bottle purchased at Julios Liquors in March 2014. Aroma is burnt caramel, brown sugar and dark fruits.

Flavor is a nice complex array of burnt sugars, toffee, pumpernickel bread, spice and Belgian yeast with some earthiness. Trances of anise. Carbonation is low and creamy. Body is more then medium. Nice night cap or after dinner brew.

Clear deep amber with a sultry aroma of boozy honey and toasted blonde grains. Big rich flavor of honey and toasted English muffin and a winter seasonal toffee earthy maltiness. Rich and boozy and malty. Warming and confronting and balanced but semisweet.

330ml bottle served in the Duvel’s tulip. A: Pours very dark amber to brown color forming a huge fizzy and bubbled beige head. Completely cloudy. Good retention and some chunks of lacings left in the glass. A thin layer that remains forever on the top S: Strong notes dark fruits in the nose. Mainly raisins. Reminds a port wine a bit. Also strong notes of wood, candy sugar, caramel malts, roasted malts and bready yeasts T: Sweet caramel upfront. Strong notes of raisins, candy sugar, caramel malts, Belgian bready yeasts. Strong Belgian character. Strong and warming. Some alcohol can be felt is the very end. Complex beer. Good bitter-sweet balance. In overall, a sweet beer with a mild bitter end M: Heavy and creamy body. Molasses. Medium to low carbonation. Fruity bittersweet aftertaste O: Great drinkability despite the 9.5%. Excellent beer. Just another de Dolle masterpiece [ BA Review @ 1/28/2010 ]

Julie thinks it is okay. It is suppose to be a strong belgium but it is a little sour. She does not mind it. She burps. She wonders if it is off. She gives a 2.8 ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"9% but the same label. dark fruit and yeastiness abound. the aroma is definitely more lactic than the flavor, but there is a slight presence in the flavor as well. not as spicy as some belgians, which is nice for a change of pace. this one was good, not great (like the special reserve)."

A bit active when I popped the cap, the pour was very slow but still very foamy. Deep brownish red in colour. It smells very yeasty and dark fruity. A semi aweetness here that crosses over to a light tartness. Plums, raisins, black cherry tartness, yeasty. My, this is complex but there’s a symphony going on. Medium bodied and co2’d, some heat from the alcohol but not to an extreme. It finishes decidedly on the dry side. Very very good.

On tap at the Thirsty Monk (AVL). Deep red-amber body with a small head. Interesting and appealing aroma; hints of brandy, wine and vague ripe fruits. Mild and subtle alcohol esters for 12% ABV. Flavor. Fruity; slightly tartness with a touch of sweetness and bitterness. Moderately strong and mildly funky flavor seems to reflect red wine barrel aging.
