The Pannepot Reserva was an idea from my brew colleague Carlo who wanted to age Pannepot in genuine French oak barrels (barrique 225 liters). We have brewed 90HL at the end of 2005 which has been aging on oak ever since (14 months). 30 Hl was bottled Tuesday 8th May 2007. 60Hl has been transferred now to second hand calvados oak vessels and will be bottled again early autumn 2007, we will name that batch Pannepot Grand Reserva. As quality and results rule at Struise, the Reserva was already brewed again and aging on oak.

Dark rich caramel brown, frothy off white head that dissipates to thin rime around glass, some lacing
Aroma - Very malty sweet, raisins, figs, dark fruits, some dark honey, sweet caramel malts, touch of toffee, soft spices, some of that Belgian yeast, almost no booze, aromatic, reminds one of Rochefort 10, this is very complex
Taste as above with dark candy sugars, very complex, very malty, dark fruits, spices, touch of chocolate, soft sherry, complex yeast esters, only slight hint of booze, getting a touch of wood, very rich flavour
Palate - Medium carb, full body, sweet palate, very smooth. Finish as main flavour, smooth, very fruity and malty with some warming booze in the finish
Overall - I would love to try normal Pannepot after this. This beer is just phenomenal - it ticks all the boxes. I have to re-rate Rochefort 10 soon and see how it compares.

Dark brown beer with beige head. Quite strong calvados. Woody as well. Also the obvious dark belgian strong ale flavors and aromas like dark sugar, plums, figs, cherry and dried fruits. Some cough surypy tones. Full palate, not too foamy. Very complex. Gets better with sediment.

330ml bottle. 2012 vintage. Black-brown colour with a beige foam head that dissipates away. Aroma of dark fruits, roast malt, red wine, woody oak. Taste is roasted malt, sweet, molasses, dark fruits, chocolate, dried fruits, raisins, port, wood, oak and some spicy bitterness. Silky smooth mouthfeel, medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, dry oaky bitter finish. Very drinkable.

2012 bottle. Was totally wasted by the time we opened that beauty but have blurry memories of another excellent Belgian strong with rich notes of dark and dried fruits, smooth mouthfeel with wine qualities. Great stuff!

Brun très foncé, tire peut-être sur le rouge. Mousse brune claire, presque orange de tenue très courte. Nez très puissant de prune, fruits secs, cerise, soutenu par le grillé du malt, note de tabac. Impression d’un digestif fruité. Attaque douce de fruit confis, fruit sec, prune, vin sec (Porto). Arrière bouche de toast, malt grillé, chicorée. Petit effet stout avec note de cacao, chocolat noir. Fin de bouche amère. Vieillissement en fût peu envident quant aux notes de chêne. Alcool très bien masqué, impressionnant. Texture presque huileuse, corps plein. Carbonatation moyenne. Bière de garde brune très complexe, balancée et maîtrisée.

Very dark brown with a red hue. Tall light brown head that dissolves to a thin layer. Some lacing. Plum, cherry, tobacco, rum and much more in the aroma. In the taste the roasted/burned bitter flavours are more forward. Overpowering if served too cold. At Warmer temperature a fruity sweetness, almost like a desert wine, takes center stage. 2010: PE 24.9.2016. Vaahtoaa hieman ja jättää aavistuksen beigeä vaahtoa oluen pinnalle pitkäksi aikaa. Syvän tummanruskea olut, ei jätä pitsiä. Tuoksu karamellisen maltainen, tumman hedelmäinen ja luumuinen, vaniljainen, suklainen, todella viettelevän houkutteleva. Maku on yhtä lailla balanssissa huikean tuoksun kanssa. Makean maltainen, tumman hedelmäinen, suklainen, aavistuksen salmiakkinen ja mausteinen. Täyteläinen ja makea suutuntuma, paahteinen jälkipuolisko. Aavistuksen karkeampi varsinkin jälkimaun puolelta kuin Reserva 2009. Loistava! Keskenään vertailtuna (2009 Reserva & 2010 normaali) jälkimmäiselle piste enemmän ulkonäöstä vaahdon takia, Reservalle taas piste enemmän pehmeytensä ansiosta.

Deep brown. Hazy. Moderate off-white head. Perfect lacing. Multi-layered aroma with dried fruit, prune, port wine, fruity acidity, smoke, peat, nuts, barrel. Medium to full body. The taste is splendid. No words to define the most of it. Certainly dried fruit. Nice fruit acidity. Dark chocolate. Oak barrel (not much of). Alco well hidden. Light bitterness. Just unique and near the ideal.

Bottle, 330 ml, vintage 2012. Pours almost opaque dark red/brown with a rapidly dissipating tan head. Some medium sized carb bubbles visible near and on the surface. Sugary sweet, cake-y malt on the nose with a lot of stuff going on alongside - big notes of cherry, raisins/dates/dried dark fruits, cognac, milk chocolate, muscovado, nuts, dark rum, tobacco, all more or less competing for attention at the forefront. Behind this we have the wood, vanilla, and spices from the barrel aging coming through fairly modestly for now, not overtaking everything like in an Innis and Gunn brew. Smells more and more like a cognac over time. Taste is sweet to begin with with much more chocolate, specifically cocoa/drinking chocolate coming through, and more of a nutty, roasted malt character with some coffee and more of those cognac flavours. Alongside this there’s dark fruits again - not as prominent than on the nose but quite juicy and sweet - and spicy, estery belgian yeast emerging before the finish - which is fairly abrupt, dry and with mild lingering dark malt bitterness. Body is medium-full and texture is moderately thick and super smooth - carbonation is fairly soft. Brilliant stuff and a must-buy for cognac fans!

Pours a dark black color with a robust tan head. Aroma of dried cherries, dried dates, candi sugar, toffee, wood, tobacco. Similar flavor profile. Lots of cherries, sugary sweetness, molasses, some gentle woodiness. Characteristic Belgian Strong esters are present and in full force. A hint of warmth from the alcohol. Soft velvety mouthfeel, slick and sticky finish. Good carbonation. One of the best.

It’s Pannepot so can’t go wrong. ;) The woody dry backbone is an extra...or not. For me it’s still weird that i like the base beer better. Especially because i think the Pannepot Grand Reserva is sensational...i guess the Calvados oak vessels round that one out.
