Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent. Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 6 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart. The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from.

Nose is light vinegar and sour cherries. A little bit of wood and vanilla. Even some smoke comes in at the end. Nice and complex, puckers up quick and then dies off. Plenty tart but not super sour, seems like barrel aging at its finest! Balances the sour, wood and fruity tartness perfectly. Little bit of brettomyces comes through...WOW, this is incredible. Easily one of the top 5 beers I have ever had.

This is as close to a perfect beer for me as they come. Especially this category. Bottle shared with Edgar from a trade. Poured into small snifters. Reddish brown pour with a tan-reddish head that lasted 60 seconds. No real lacing. Aroma of tart cherries, barrel, oak, tannins, yeasts, and sour purple grapes. The taste was amazingly bold with the tart cherries, grapes, oak barrel and light malts to balance. Sour finish with leather. Pucker up at the end. Smooth, light body. Damn fine sour.

Bottle to glass. Pours a cloudy mid-brown color with a frothy light brown head. Aroma is mostly tart, some malty sweetness, slight sweet wine. Flavor is quite tart, with a hint of candied malty sweetness. Light to medium in body with an oily lingering sour. Delicious!

2013 vintage. Pours a hazy amber with ruby hues and a finger’s worth of an off-white head. Breaks into delicate lace. Aromas of very tart cherries, spice, perfume and wet oak. Taste is just as bold. On the higher end of the tartness spectrum. Floral notes along with the cherries gives this a bright burst, then quelled by some moderately sweet notes of caramel/vanilla. A lively carbonation keeps things moving to the finish where nice oak/spice play into the dry, tart cherry flavor.
