4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 legion242 (1835) - Richardson, Texas, USA - JAN 31, 2012
Poured dark as night with a thick, creamy khaki head. Nose had hints of coconut, which had me scared right away, but very little of said coconut made it’s way into the flavours.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Chudwick (345) - Taylor Mill (KY), FRANCE - JAN 29, 2012
Draft - pours black with rich tan head and great lacing. Nose is roasted malts. Aroma is plum, alcohol, coffee and raisin. Taste is sweet and a tad bitter. Full body and sticky texture. dry finish. Tasty and rich.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DocLock (5770) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 28, 2012
Bottle. Pours absolutely raven black, turbid, with 3-finger brown head. This one looks great. Nose is big choc malt, cacao, plum, blackberry, molasses, Brazil nut. Tastes very rich, with heavy malt, blackstrap molasses, cacao, blackberry, port, and prune, some anise, and more hops in the finish as well as more of a charred character. In fact, the charred and pruney flavor gets a tad strong late. This one is very good, but not elite.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Occidentalist (2) - Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA - JAN 26, 2012 does not count
Completely opaque. Low head on an unaggressive pour. Attractive mocha colored foam. Aroma is a nice mix of coffee/chocolate/vine fruit. Slightly sticky in the mouth with low carbonation. Initial taste is very sweet. Finishes with a bitter char taste. This beer takes you for a ride. With each additional sip, the bitterness at the end mellowed out. It gets better the more you drink it. A very nice and friendly Russian Imperial. Not as complex as the more regarded Russian Imperial Stouts but Big Eddy is much much cheaper. Extremely great value for your dollar if you want a tasty Russian Imperial without breaking the bank.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 superspak (584) - Michigan, USA - JAN 25, 2012
12 ounce bottle into snifter, best by 4/25/2011(bottled Dec 2010). Pours pitch black with a nice 1-2 finger very dense tan head with fantastic retention that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, dark fruits, apple, wood, light smoke, molasses, and caramel. Some nice and fairly complex aromas. Taste of rich chocolate, caramel, toffee, molasses, light fruit, coffee, roasted malt, herbal hops, and light smoke. Not much bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, caramel, herbal spiciness, coffee, and toffee for a good bit. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very nice creamy and lush mouthfeel. Very easy and smooth to drink at 9.5%. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed well after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial stout. Easy drinking; with rich flavor, and nice balance.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jsmerig (400) - Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 24, 2012
Pours thick and black like oil. Aroma is of molasses, smoke, dark cherries and malt. Taste is initially very sweet with a backbone of smokey bitterness creeping up through the tasting. The finish is a blend of sweet and spicy/smokey with the smokey bitterness winning in the end. You can definiately feel the alchohol in this one. Good on a cold winter’s night
1.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20 DavoleBomb (965) - Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 20, 2012
Leine makes a Russian imperial stout?!? I had to try it. Poured into a snifter.
4.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of creamy light brown head. Retention is good and plenty of lacing is left. I’m impressed so far.
2.5 S: The first thing I noticed was a distinct aroma that I can’t quite put my finger on. All that I can say is that it’s not a smell that should be in beer. It’s somewhere between rubber and solvent. It’s hard to get past this scent, but I’ll try. Chocolate with a slight soy sauce character. Soft roastiness. Surprisingly hoppy with a dominant herbal character.
1.5 T: Ewwww! This is fucking gross. It tastes something like what I would imagine fermented tobacco to taste like. The solvent/rubber sustance is in full gear. It coats my tongue like paint, burns it a little, then dissipates. More bitter than I like from the style and it presents in an almost acrid way. In addition to the bitterness, it is equally sweet at the same time. Chocolate, caramel, and molasses manifest from this sweetness.
3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy with a boozy finish. Not that bad here.
1.5 D: I don’t know if this beer is green or hasn’t been processed properly at some point, but I’m picking up tons of puketastic flavors from this. Avoid.
