4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye has a thick, creamy, beige head and a dark amber or honey appearance with lots of thick lacing left behind and a huge amount of fine particles floating about. The aroma is of sweet, spicy bread, sugar candy, pine needles, turpentine, and nectar. Taste is of very bitter hops, sweetness, Christmas sweet bread, sugar, and citrus peel. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and Hop Rod Rye finishes semi-dry and fairly easy drinking. Overall, this is very, very nice, and I beg you to try it. RJT

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
It’s easy to see why this is rated so highly. Even in a bottle of questionable age, the diverse flavors of rye, citrus and tangerine really come out of this. Pours maroon with good head and lacing. Thick consistency, well hidden booze. This is a beer I could come back to a lot. Everything is well tempered, and not a massive hop bomb but more than enough. Bottle.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
355mL bottle from Beer Cartel
Bronze body, beige head hangs around.
Hops dominant nose - woody, citrusy typical American fair. Nutty, toasty malt underneath, a touch of rye peppery spice in there, but not obvious.
Moderately low carbonation, seemingly accentuates the slick, oily, clingy texture from the rye, and adds great length.
Lovely chewy bready, toasty, nutty malt continues on the body, well pronounced spicy hops kick in with a good measure of citrus and sap character. Smooth finish, good bittterness provides excellent balance.
Good IPA/IBA, rye provides that extra dimension.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This is good. Big pine on the nose up front. Great deep amber poor. A hint of spice and big malty back bone to this ipa but it’s not annoyingly sweet or syrupy but adds nicely to the beer. Nice mellow bitterness. Alcohol isn’t hot or too noticeable. Very good beer.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from a bottle. Deep, reddish brown. Cream colored head. Lots of lacing. Rye shows up in the aroma but the nose fades quickly. A little spiciness in the taste which doesn't quite cover up the sweetness which lasts through the aftertaste. Good.
