COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Review #100! A: Pours an extremely dark body that looks a little thinner than one might expect. I like how vigorously the carbonation rises to the top, even if the one finger tan head has lacking retention/lacing. S: A total sensory overload of dark, bittersweet chocolate. I mean HOLY SHIT. As a chocolate lover, this is total nirvana. I would complain about it upsetting the balance of the other stout characteristics (such as roastiness), but who cares? The smell is so amazingly in your face and shamelessly bold that it’s hard not to fall in love with it. T: I admit to having a bias toward chocolatey stouts (or, for that matter, chocolatey anything), but I have to admit. This is incredible. The booze does make a bit of an appearance on the finish, but it fits here. Aside from the bittersweet dark chocolate explosion, notes of dark fruit, coffee, and licorice pop up in patches. Still, this is something that knows what it’s trying to accomplish, and doesn’t go for anything different. Subtlety? Balance? Complexity? Fuck that. Here’s more chocolate. Sure, I’m a huge advocate of those three criteria, but sometimes, you just want to be punched in the face with a certain flavor you really enjoy. That’s exactly what Choklat is, an unashamedly one-note chocobomb. Chocoholics, your heaven in a bottle has arrived. M: A little thin given its alcohol weight, but it bulks up just as it gets ready to leave the tongue covered in stickiness. Carbonation is low as expected, but dryness is high. Some of the flaws of its body may be more evident on a lesser beer, but it’s hard to say it’s overly porteresque (which it is) when the rest of the beer is so enjoyable. O: I’d only ever drink one of these at a time, because trust me on this one - a little goes a long way, in fact, it would be best to share the bottle with friends. I can’t give it all 5’s in good conscience, since it’s not quite perfect by any stretch, but I can’t think of a beer I enjoyed more in such a long time. It might be overdone for non-chocolate lovers, though. Even if you’re not, it’s more than worth a try. If you do love chocolate, then this is something to go out of your way to discover.

650 ml bottle. (Southern Tier Brewery) Lakewood, NY.
Bought 2011. Very dark brown or black colour with a small light brown head. The aroma is very much chocolate. It’s delicious milk chocolate. It’s delicious. The flavour is also very chocolatey. There’s some roasted malt, mild hops and some sweetness. And some more chocolate. Choklat is not a bad name for this. Very nice. 11% is very nicely hidden. This is a Imperial Stout for my taste. There’s no coffee, there’s no ashy dryness. Nice. Mayas were right, xocoatl is yummy.

22oz bottle split with my wife. A: Pours in a solid stream of black ooze. Thin ring of mocha head. Nice legs. N: Chocolate syrup. Big surprise there, really. Vanilla extract and tons more of the milk chocolate. There are hints of malt and then again..syrup. T: Bitter chocolate mixed with the syrup. Surprisingly bitter and has an unpleasant chalky taste. Has some smoke and leather elements. Can’t tell if I like it. M: Pleasantly carbonated with a decently thick body. Alcohol is well hidden. O: A strange concoction that’s not as sweet as you’d expect and not as complex as you might want. Not great. Oh well.

Bomber bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Lots of folks are writing saying that this tastes like a candy bar but I’m having trouble with that statement. More sweet that bitter, the chocolate seems weak and the "imperialness" is also on the weaker end. Guess I expect these two elements to be more on the strong side.

I love this beer it is like drinking a chocolate candy bar. Share a bomber with a few people because too much of this brew gets to be too much. It is a good dessert beer that would go good with vanilla ice cream. It is sweet and chocolaty and the chocolate is very prevalent on the nose. Not powdered chocolate but molten chocolate flavor.

Wow -- liquid dessert but not a simpleton stout! Strong, strong chocolate aroma. Chocolate flavor hits you at the front and back ends and is just splendid. It's the middle part that makes this beer though. Beautiful stout base. Roastiness in abundance. There's a lot here -- enough to satisfy the geeks and the newbies. Highly recommended! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A deep black body with a nice brown head that did have some nice retention. Aroma had a good mix of leather, roasted coffee malts and lots of chocolate. Both bittersweet and sweet chocolates. Flavor seemed to have a good roasted malt base and the chocolate seemed to have a really great bitter-sweet flavor. The bitterness seemed to blend really well with the coffee malts and the sweetness added layers of flavor to it. Alcohol was a nice warming presence in the finish. Nice.

Pours black with mild aroma of chocolate. Tastes of slightly bitter chocolate which was unexpected. Finishes with a creamy mouthfeel.

Smells and taste like heaven! Absolutely wonderful chocolate flavor. Hits the palate with a full body, leaving an abrupt finish of alcohol to compliment the chocolate flavors. I didn’t want to put this beer down! Definately recommended.

I aged this one since 2011 and surprisingly it still has a super boozy nose; still a delicious chocolate ale with a bit of caramel, vanilla on the nose and a clear, healthy dosing of cocoa; thick bodied with a resiny hoppiness and bitterness from the cacao; age has done this well.
