Bottle share at Cad’s. 2012 vintage, 10.5%. Black, big foamy brown head. Aroma is very sweet with vanilla and molasses. Body is medium, foamy, low carbonation. Taste is rounded malts, boozey, vanilla and coconut, dry finish. Decent imperial stout, but not good enough to warrant the £20 I paid for it!

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Vintage 2012.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Burger Bar. Pitch black pour with a generous dark khaki head leaving spotty lace. Nose is prominent bourbon with hints of wood vanilla and dark fruit, Taste is less pronounced bourbon though it does increase as it warms with light toffee and medium bitter chocolate and coffee. Medium full creamy mouth with soft carbonation. Some subtle layers but the bourbon is dominant.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011 vintage aged almost 4 years
Pours a jet black, opaque body. Small 1/4 inch dark chocolate head. Lacing and head retention were average.
Smell is of milk chocolate and fresh baked brownies. Roasted caramel malt and hints of coffee come through also. Getting very little bourbon and for 11%, the alcohol is pretty light on the nose.
Taste is big on charred oak, burnt coffee, and smoked malt. Bourbon adds some depth to the beer as it warms. Hops aren’t present, alcohol is there but not overwhelming. Lots of layers of flavors going on.
Mouthfeel is good, Brooklyn does such a good job with their bottle conditioned beer, carbonation is spot on. Just wish that the head retention lasted longer than 5 minutes.
Overall this was a great beer thats been on my want list forever. One of the pioneers of bourbon aged stouts, just wish the bourbon was more apparent. A nice head would have also propelled this beer to top ten status but its still pretty enjoyable.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Wood and bourbon on the aroma. Appearance is a dark brown with a tan head with good retention. Bourbon and oak dominant the flavor with notes of chocolate and a smooth roast character. Mouthfeel is full with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a good bourbon oak stout, but it's not worth it's price.

2014 bottle shared. Motor oil black pour, thin tan head. Big dark chocolate heavy roast nose, good oak, light vanilla. Taster is big dark roast, dark choc, dark coffee, and well integrated barrel notes. Good fruitiness, no vanilla overload. Well balanced, no booze sting. Medium/full body. Barrel and roasty chocolate linger. Expensive, but good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 mL bottle. Pours a stouty blackish brown, massive coffee colored head with excellent retention. Nose is heavy barrel, dark roast, cocoa, licorice, coffee, woody. Mouth is medium bodied -- thinner than I’d expect in a stout to be sure -- relatively dry as well (I’m guessing the champagne yeast has a lot to do with that), a whole of the barrel kind of drowns out much everything else. A bit of soot detectable near the dry finish, along with some bitterness. Decent, but not my favorite BA stout by a long shot. Anyway, popped this open to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Who would’ve been 86 today. A true ’drum major for peace’.
