COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.
Bottled at 5.2% abv - can go up as high as 7.2%

29/02/2012 Fresh example, very little Brett influence besides the loud pop and foam. Superb pale ale.

Bottle. Pours Orange/Amber with generous head. Hints of citrus, flowers and herbs on the nose. Taste a bit more bitter than anticipated with the citrus aspect latching on.

This is so different from batch to batch. First one was had in 2007. Last on was 1 year ago in Italy. It is still one of the best, but every time I get my mount on it - it is different. Not like Kwak (came to my mind) - always the same. Next time I will add details.

Bottle. Hazy dark yellow orangish color with big white lacing head. Aroma of leather, stable. Medium body, lively carbonated, warming alcohol. Fruity flavor with spicy tones. Bitterness in aftertaste lingers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Have had this numerous times. Pours orange, brown with a nice head. Fantastic balance between funkiness (brett), bitterness and lots of dryness. This is my go-tobeer in any bar I ever visit. For me THE Belgian Ale.

Bottle @ home. Pours hazy orange with thick foamy white head. Aroma is very Brett, tropical fruits, mango, sweet oranges, citrus. Taste is a touch wild, very carbonated, dry, crisp.

Bottle aged for 15 months, from Aba-jour, Ghent. Leathery almost horseblanket farmyard, atop the joyous crisp blond I love. Stunning.

Another fine Trappist, sampled at home, in Amsterdam (where it performed substantially better than at home), in Brussels and Paris (ditto) between April-July 2014 and again in Brussels Jan 2015. Has the aroma, pour, head, palate that one would expect of any true Monastery ale. A little too hoppy for me, a little smoother would be nice. But I quibble. Try this in a tulip as your introduction to Trappists. And get it in Benelux if you can, the bottles I drank over there were far smoother than at home and would earn it a 4.5...if only...

6.2% bottle. Thick white head on amber cloudy, sweet smelling beer. Some sweetness in the taste - sugary sweetness rather than fruity. Heavy in its character and containing yeast it is bready and it is in some ways like a wheat beer reminding me of Paulaner. Lovely beer

BOD 2/7/13, BBD 2/7/18. Pours a clear medium amber (copper) with just a hint of garnet. World Class head volume, lacing and retention - the best I have ever seen. The final pour provides a mild cloudiness. Complex nose of sweet fruit (grape, pineapple) coupled with tart lemon. Underneath there are notes of Belgian yeast, a slight spice, subtle sweetness and a bit of slightly sour earthiness (funk). Medium body with a creamy texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. Unfortunately, the flavor profile isn’t as impressive as the appearance or the aroma. It is intense, lacks complexity, and is poorly balanced. From the onset, phenols dominate and little else comes forward. In the middle, a bit of biscuit sweetness is underneath, but you really have to "look" for it. The finish is dry.
