4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bsour (78) - Boise, USA - JAN 9, 2009
On tap at The Front Door
Dark reddish brown with an almost non-existent beige head. Interesting aroma with citrus from the hops and caramel from the malt. Not something I’m used to in a beer.
It took about half way through the beer before deciding it was great. My palate kept getting confused on what I was drinking. A porter? An IPA? It was like mixing the porter that’s on tap at my house, and the homebrew IPA in bottles. Doesn’t sound like it would be all that good. It is. But it definitely has to grow on you.

Bottle, thanks to Duffman. Pours clear black, thick pale tan head, great lacing. Nose is lemon hops, light roast, very soapy, otherwise clean juniper. Flavours of lemongrass, spice, roast, ginger. Okay, but out of balance...
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Oakes (10191) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 17, 2012
Kind of a murky chestnut brown with a thin bubbly head. The aroma is very toasty and earthy, both from malt and hops. Toasty palate with earthy hops, a dull bitterness and unfortunately not much brightness. Gets chewy towards the finish, possibly with some alcohol. Just needed something for me to latch onto.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Fatehunter (148) - - MAY 17, 2012
Poured into a giant seidel. A big two fingers of foamy, light tan head on top of a dark brown body.
The smell is perplexing. Rich roasted malt smell and then citrus, sharp lemon.
It first tastes like banana, then lemon, wheat bread, finishes with a sharp grapefruit.
Soft texture, creamy but with a sharpness to it. Medium to heavy body, moderate carbonation.
I liked it, but it was unbalanced and took me for a ride, which is fun too.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 bnoel09 (272) - Elk Grove, California, USA - MAY 13, 2012
Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Black with a slight reddish hue and a cream colored head. Some roasted malt and a lot of wet, grassy hops in the aroma. Flavor has dark roasted malt that provides some chocolate and woody notes, followed with grassy hops. Medium bodied with a slightly chewy mouthfeel. Overall a really nice black IPA.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 SHIG (2703) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - MAY 13, 2012
Bottle: Poured a dark chocolate brown with red edges along the glass. The head was thin bubble off white to tan. Aroma is citrus, hoppy, and sticky sweet malt. Taste is gritty pine and citrus hops with soft roast malt balance. Warms the palate.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Holdwine (1016) - Beertimore, Maryland, USA - MAY 7, 2012
Decent enough, if not a bit overhopped black IPA. Bottle is the reason I bought, my daughter was reading the book "Dogzilla". The purchase paid off as this is a well rounded effort. A bit much of the hops on the nose and tongue.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Scipio (185) - Vernon Hills, Illinois, USA - MAY 3, 2012
Pours a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma is very roasty, heavy in coffee, licorice, chocolate, while a bit bready. There are some orange citrus notes as well. Taste is quite sweet and contains much more citrus flavors than I would have expected and is very bitter. It is a stark contrast between the aroma and flavor, while both are enjoyable. Bitter finish lingers. Medium body, not as hoppy as many IPAs, with an oily texture. This is pretty different than most beers of this style. I bought it on a whim and I’m happy with the result.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 PhilDBrewer (37) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 13, 2012
Pours dark brown with a very thick tan head. Aroma is very earthy - not all that pleasant. Taste is also earthy - not noteably hoppy or malty. Pretty blah. As someone who generally likes BIPAs, this one is a letdown.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Beershine (4725) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - APR 8, 2012
Bottle. Really dark brown, with a fairly thick tan sudsy head. Aroma consists of husky dark black chocolate malts, with some citrus and mint overlay. It’s a slightly disjointed aroma. The flavors are a lot more convincing and cohesive. The palate is very juicy and moreish. The flavors come together to provide a good balance between dark, bitter, husky roast and crisp minty hop bitterness. There is a little citrus bitterness in the finish too. It’s perfectly drinkable, just not real tight.
