Had this one in the fridge for awhile and felt i had to psyche myself up a bit before i could finally crack it open. Once i did pop the bastard little cork, i carefully tilted the mystical bottle and poured myself a sipping glass of black wonder. Witnessed a ruby dark black that shifted to pitch midnight tone once fully poured. No head rested on top, just a glass of "what the hell am i about to drink?" Shifted my nose towards the rim and was treated to a very complex array of smells...cherries, port, brandy, raisin, tar, cigar, pavement, grease, fig and plum. Taste was amazing...dropping (not just hints) but full blown novels containing roasted cold chestnuts, almonds, various forms of candied fruit, fig cake, whiskey pies, grandaddy’s rum, copper (like the taste of a penny). Flavour was very complex, somewhat overwhelming, highly alcoholic, and strangely, not hard to drink and enjoy. The finish is a real kicker, settling back in the inner valleys of the downtown part of the tongue and, like tiny scorpions, just sitting there for a while and lashing their tails...what a beautiful sting. By the end of this bottle I felt like I was living inside of a Melvins record.

7.5cl sample at the Ghent Beer Festival VI (22 VIII 2015). Black tanned imperial stout build upon the traditional stout features. Coffee is accompanied by fairly sweet accents. Heavy, truly heavy brew with brown sugar, bitter and malt notes. The aftertaste is so very long and fine. Heavy!

To sum it up: over the top. Blackest of blacks, bitterest of bitters, most alcoholic of stouts. I understand it, you wanna make something harder, sheerer, broader. But this tastes not like beer, but like the hardest linctus. The tasting goes like: it pours pitch black, long-lasting sienna head. Aroma is very high: coffee, liquorice, chicory, burnt caramel, Worcestershire sauce. Taste is sweetish, oily, powerful. Good carb. Finish is bitter as hell and ruins it all, I must say.

375 ml bottle into snifter, best before 10/22/2025. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark brown head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Incredible appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, molasses, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, raisin, prune, cherry, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, wood, and roast/char earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt, brown sugar, and fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, molasses, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, raisin, prune, cherry, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, wood, and roast/char earthiness. Large amount of pine/wood char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, molasses, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, dark fruit, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, wood, and roast/char earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roasted malt, brown sugar, and fruity yeast flavors; with a solid roasted bitter/sweet balance; and some astringent roasted character lingering after the finish, but not overbearing. Light-moderate increasing dryness due to strong bitterness as well. Light carbonation and full body; with a very creamy/slick and sticky/resinous/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish for a while. Overall this is a very nice huge imperial stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of roasted malt, brown sugar, and fruity yeast flavors; and fairly smooth to sip on for the enormous ABV. This was quite strong on bitterness, but some good age should tone down the bitter hop/char character to more sensible levels. This was still very enjoyable, but a very slow sipper.

First impressions on the nose are acetate, nail polish remover and the taste confirms with hot alcohol. Sampled version is 2012 vintage so probably not going to get any better. Apart from that there is nothing going on in this beer - no complex flavours. Disappointing.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2016 Fantastic, big, beige head. In aroma full of vanilla, almonds, nuts, chocolate pralines, licorice, roasted sunflower seeds, flash of alcohol. Taste is so sweet. Full of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts ends with too long lasting alcoholic finish. Body is full. Very good imperial stout.
