Rate no - 800! Keg at BD. Black with a bronze head and slight brown hue when held to the light. Aroma is unchecked roasty malt and figgy sweetness. Doesn’t really signpost the imminent ABV. Flavour has rampant booze and lots of roasted character. Ashen. Smoky fag ash though. Dark chocolate bitterness sucks all moisture from your mouth. When finished, it leaves a vivid golden lace clinging to the interior of the glass. A pretty intense beer. Too intense maybe. Tears strips of Tokyo* though.

Black. Dark as they come with a big brown head, looks amazing. Hefty aroma, massive chocolate and licorice, some coffee, hint of smokiness, ovaltine, very little alcohol considering, some dark fruits possibly from the alcohol. Taste is quite ashy, dry dark chocolate and licorice, good hit of alcohol in there as well. Not too sweet, bone dry. A hell of a beast

Pour black, with a brownish hue, and a large frothy mocha-brown head. Aroma is really roasted/burned of coffee, slight chocolate, slight caramel, some smoke and tobacco. Taste is pretty sugary sweet upfront, with a heavy dose of bitterness at the end. Medium bodied, with a semi-flat carb. A lot of heat all over. Would Probably benefit from a little aging.

Bottled Dec ’07, reviewed May ’12 (4.5 years). Pours black with no head. Aroma is very sweet smelling, more like a port than a beer. Some vegemite shows along with grape notes. Also some chocolate fudge. Flavours include smooth booze, roasted malt, more roasted malt and ash. Some soft vinous notes. Pretty serious stuff, but good for sipping. A fairly hoppy bitterness in the finish. Not all that complex though. No carbonation and a very syrupy body that suits the beer well.

Bottle (375ml). Inch-thick dark beige head, reducing fairly rapidly. Pitch black oil-like colour. Rich, sweet aroma of roasted malt, syrup, licorice, coffee, chocolate, wood, solvent and even some hops. Full body, oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Each sip is a journey, starting massively sweet, then an explosion of bitterness, sweetness and acidity, all in some weird ’harmony’. The bitterness dominates the finish, which is dry and woody, creating a fascinating contrast to the sweetness upfront. An astonishing stout that is also very demanding due to its ’massiveness’ - took me three evenings to finish the bottle.

Mikkeller Black 2012 on Tap @ Mikkeller bar. Solid black, small beige head, little lacing. Aroma is blackcurrant, liquorice, chocolate, plum, leather. Oily mouthfeel, quite heavy on the palate, quite a bitter finish. Taste is liquorice, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, bitter coffee, tobacco. Surprisingly it wasn’t particularly boozy. Love the aroma but the taste is just a too harsh. Should mellow nicely with some aging.

Pours deep black with a short life brown thin head. Roasted coffee aroma, roasted malt, milk chocolate and booze. Very complex in aroma, taste and overall!! The taste is full of notes of dark chocolate, smokey hint, licorice, roasty malt, molasses and caramel. Medium to high sweetness, medium bitterness. Full body, creamy, soft carbonation. Finish with silky mouthfeel and all the complex flavours lik the very start. Amazing and weird but extraordinary good.

Poured pitch black with almost no head. Alcohol taste was almost overwhelming. Very sweet but would release some smokiness from time to time. Reminded me more of a barley wine than a stout.

Pours intense. Dark. Aroma is slightly strange...kinda like a rodenbach. But it mellows into a coffee like aroma. Full bodied. Big brew.
