COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Pours jet black, tan head which soon settles. Scotch whiskey, oak, oats, roast malt. Absolutely incredible aroma. Heavy roast malt dominates the flavour, thankfully the whiskey is not overdone. The slightest nuance of peat intertwines with the bitter hop character. Slick, robust, warming with a finish which goes on forever. This beer is a work of art.

Bottle no 24190, Feb 2014. L0503. BB March 2017. Pours darkish brown with a steady, medium in size, beige head that leaves some scattered lace. The aroma is pleasant, alas a bit subdued (till the end), giving off notes of chocolate powdery and roasty malts and (cheapish) whisky; tastes likewise with sweet chocolaty notes most dominant, and the slightly salty whisky playing second fiddle. In the finish the whisky is not too convincing, feels a bit like those chocolate sweets with a drop of whisky inside.. Soft on the palate, with thin and modest carbonation. Overall... doesn’t seem as multilayered and enjoyable, say, compared to the 16 YO I had nearly two years ago (and probably rated a bit too optimistically at 4.2), or other BA brews that I’ve had in the meantime. It is very good though, but I hope the 18 YO will be a lot better.

FROTHINGSLOSH (6536) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 11, 2016
I really liked the others in this series but this one was rather disappointing. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweetish and malty with notes of caramel, molasses, whiskey and a touch of chocolate. The flavor was bitter and malty with wood and whiskey notes. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.

Black oily pour with zero head. Very low carbonation. Nice smell of whiskey barrel but not real volatile. Dark roast taste. Nice. More porter style than what I typically think of as old ale.

Bottle - Dark pour with an average tan head. Light coffee aroma, nuts and a woodsy whiskey taste. Also has some stout overtones to it. This a good beer!
