COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

0,33l bottle. Black color, nice head. Gentle roasted malts, vanilla and tar in the aroma. Flavor is incredibly smooth, and all sorts of nuances are notable; caramel, coffee, smoke, and a hint of whisky as well. Nice warming alcohol in the finish.

Bottle 33cl, a dark beer with medium head. Nose is on smoked and wood touch. Aroma is sweet with over riped fruit, caramel, smoked and toasted notes with light sour touch, light ashes too, very roasted.

Pours pitch black color with light, lacy head. Aroma of distinct oak notes, soft vanilla and liquorice. Flavor of peat, toasted malts and dry chocolate. Silky smooth palate. Quite different product compared to the "base".

Quite viscous, colour is deep black with dark beige head. It smells to roast malt, quite sweet and with some chocolate notes. Taste is also sweet more chocolately than the smell. Medium bitter palate.

330ml bottle. The first think that you notice when pouring the beer in the glass is not the intense black color, the small mocha head with low retention, or the oily look, it’s the whiskey in the air. Aroma is sweet chocolate, whiskey, good espresso coffee, caramel, vanilla, malt, grains and something cheesy. Taste is dominated by burned sugar diluted with coffee and roasted malt, very balanced, round, a little more on the bitter side. Good, but nothing spectacular and overpriced.

Cask at GBBF. Opaque black beer. Decent tan head. Softish palate. Airy dark malt with immediate blend of subtle vanilla oak. More obvious smoky whisky from the Highland Park. All very well joined up and with a nice carbonated bite.

Thisisgoodbeer! Dark, black. Has a light brown head, mostly lasting. Aroma starts malty, then medicine notes, iodine-but not too much, just a hint, faint smoke too. Perfect flavor, sweetness to a start, nice notes of old beer, medicine, complex. Iron, long-long duration, roasted notes, perhaps Islay whisky, peat.

Pours whisper of tan foam. Black body. Bit of carbonation clinging to glass side. Aroma of lite soy sauce. Flavors of soy, prunes and charred steak. Slight warmth in back of throat. Tar flavor lingers on palate. A bit of chewiness in the mouthfeel. Glad I finally got around to trying this.

330ml bottle pours almost black in color with a small beige head that settles and leaves no lacing behind. Aromas of peat and whiskey with chocolate and roasted grains and a hint of coffee. Taste is caramel and chocolate malty sweetness with a roasted grain and coffee bitterness and peat. Medium bodied with low carbonation. A nice sipping brew which was a good tasting experience.

April 6, 2012, 8.0% abv; 330mL bottle, cellared, BTL: Jul/2011, BBD: Jun/2014 Sour chocolate aromas dominate with this weird touch of wheat. Somewhat soya saucy. Oxidized? Low carbonation. Pours a tar black with a light tan head. Pretty viscous. Initial tastes of boiled beans, then an overwhelming roasted chocholate with vanilla. As it warms strong flavours of campfire, whiskey malt and booze. Interesting stuff. Silky and full bodied with a very light carbonation. Interesting taste and character. Scotch did not come out the way I had expected (though I’ve never had a Highland Park), but the sweetness was there. Aromas were a bit of throw off.
