4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 ComradeK (526) - Blue Mountains, - OCT 9, 2011
1 pint, 8 fl. oz. bottle (whatever that is in ml), 2011 release. Pours a clear copper-amber, with a large, fluffy white head, which lasts well, and leaves excellent lacing. Fresh, floral hops notes mix with a forest-like mix of leafy and rsin aromas, with some caramel to provide support. Spicy hops build into a delightful crescendo of floral and tropical fruit flavours, which in turn flow into a smooth caramel malt body, with persistent tropical notes, especially sweet pineapple. The spice notes reappear in the finish, along with some mild grapefruit. I cannot praise this highly enough. It is much more subtly-hopped than most American IPAs, yet it is far from bland. Rather, it is delightfully subtle and complex. The fruit flavours especially give it a wonderful depth of character, and significantly contribute to making this one of the best IPAs I have had.

2012 1 pint 8 ounces. Poured a lofty head that I could have walked on. Red hue in appearance and clear as can be. Hop profile outstanding. Full body.

Golden amber color, rich hop aroma, pours with a thick creamy head. Mouthfeel is nice and soft. Rich oily hops pop on the palate over a slightly sweet malt back. A wonderfully balanced hoppy ale.

Thanks, Chipalsa. Nose is nice grapefruit and citrus notes with caramel. Bronze colored body with a white, foamy head. Overall, I thought this one was nicely balanced with nice sweet orange notes, apricot, grapefruit, pineapple, and guanabana. Tropical fruits galore for me. Good stuff.

FINALLY found this fuggin’ beer. The body has a beautiful, hazy sunset orange to it. Aromas are right on with floral hops, grapefruit and perhaps some dry maple tones. The hop profile on this one is moderate - perfectly balanced by flavors of fresh oranges, some rind and a clean finish. I actually liked this better than the Northern counterpart.

Pours a deep reddish brown with off-white foamy head with great lacing. Aroma comes off a bit like rye bread darker in flavor with peppery notes underneath. Taste is malt forward followed by a deeper sweetness. The bitterness starts late in the taste but carries on as the predominant lingering effect. However it is dry and nicely balanced.

Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a stressful Monday night after seeing my computer die 5 days before my wedding. Appearance is a slightly clear dark caramel with a rich white head that laces to the glass. Aroma is definitely hoppy, more of the citrus variety, definitely getting a whole cone hop aroma, smells very nice and slightly floral. Taste goes down rather bitter, pine like aftertaste, definitely full bodied but not really too malty. At first I didn’t quite know about this one, but after a while it grew on me. It’s pretty good stuff, not sure if I’d get it again, but it is good.

Meaty, grassy, very satisfying aroma, strong bitterness and solid, heavy malts. Very unique flavor.

24oz bottle bottled the 116th day of 2012 (April 15th) fom Olive Tree Market in OB. Clear medium amber with a 1 1/2 finger beige head, pretty good retention. Aroma has some skunky light berry notes--not sure if this beer has seen much light, though Mike claimed they just got it today or yesterday. Also some lightly sweet toasty malt. A touch minty as well. Flavor has a bit of caramel and some floral hops, low citrus--not in the Cascade typical US hop variety, though. I can’t say that it’s the lime citrus that Motueka is supposed to be known for. I just get a little bit of grassy hops. Dry finish with stronger caramel just before, bitterness peaked at a 4. Creamy medium body with low carbonation. For being pretty fresh (and an IPA, no less), there’s not a lotta hops going on. Definitely not bad, just darker APAish.

24oz bottle from Discount Liquor Milwaukee, bottled on 4/25/2012. Pours a bright, copper color with an off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, pine, floral. Medium on the palate with soft carbonation. Flavor is bitter, hoppy, pine, a little bready malts, with a bitter hop finish. Good, but I think the northern hemisphere is better.

Floral, yeast, and pine aroma. Amber with off white head. Decent sticking lacing. Floral, lemon, malt sweet flavored. Balanced with medium bitterness.
