4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 sound67 (223) - Offenbach, - NOV 6, 2009
355ml dark brown bottle, as pictured.
Colour is pitch black, with a big, frothy beige head. Great retention, generous lacing. Very pretty beer. ;=)
Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and hazel nuts. White coffee note, too.
Heavy-bodied stout with thick, creamy mouth feel. Low carbonation, just right.
Flavours include caramel, licorice and coffee. Not too sweet, not too bitter - extremely well balanced - and no "coal like" notes as in Guinness Draught and some other stouts. Dry, bitter finish and lingering espresso after taste.
Heavier in style than their "Taddy Porter", a supreme winter beer. One of the great stouts out there, and, with the bitter finish, highly sessionable. A great beer, from a great brewery, of Britain.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hlkanga (86) - - MAY 30, 2012
355 ml bottle. Pours rubyish almost opaque colour with a large foamy head. Aroma has roasty and caramel malt, strong licorice and a hint of chocolate. Quite sweet flavour has some of chocolate, banana and a hint of licorice. Medium bodied. Rather thick mouthfeel. Long toasty licorice finish. Has plenty of character by being so sweet but cold be slightly more bitter for my taste.

Pours black with thick dark tan head. Aromas of coffee, roasted nuts, oatmeal, brown sugar, and malt. Very complex aroma in general. Coffee out in the front for flavor, fading hints of chocolate and malts. Very delicious and understated stout. Definitely keeping a couple in the fridge. Isn’t trying so hard to be special.

Deep pitch black poor with a nice mocha coloured head. Chocolate and coffee aroma with the flavour of both on top of a nice roasted malt background. Smooth and silky, went down extremly well.

550ml bottle. Big thick coffee coloured head of foam atop a deep dark black beer. Strong aromas of roasted malt and chocolate with a flavor to match. Thin in the mouth but this is not a bad thing. Perfect beer for the weather as autumn fades into winter.

33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 18.01.2011
Aroma is roasted with milk chocolate, some oat and coffee. Flavour has chocolate, oat, some cocoa and hints of coffee. I’ve had couple of these, but every time this is just too thin and light for my taste. Even at a room temp.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Koskela (37) - Marysville, California, USA - MAY 16, 2012
A beautiful beer by samuel smith. The aroma is excelent and the color is dark brown with a light brown creamy head. Thank god for oats. The taste is chocolately with a hint of sweetness at the end. Choc. Malt was used for sure and maybe a hint of roasted malt or barley. Very good in deed no hop bitternes and no after taste. It was smooth and enjoyable with a medium/full body and it was great all the way to the last drop. Worth a buy and many rebuys.
