COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap @ both Apex & Horse Brass. 16 and 10iz pour, respectively. Pours apple juice, white foamy head, good lacing. Aroma is heavy hops, grapefruit, little piney I guess. The most outstanding aspect of this beer is that initial flavor just after you swallow: itís like a fruity bouquet of awesomeness explodes in your mouth-- like Fruit Stripe gum. Amazing smooth for 100 IBU, alcohol is amazingly well hidden. I feel like this could be a session beer, if not for the cost... And ABV. The best IPA Iíve had, or likely will ever have.

Many thanks to Werckmeister for this bottle! Bottles 27.02.15. Very floral in the nose. Leaves, Grapefruit. Fresh and smooth beginning. Sweetish fresh body. Very smooth. The sweetish body is a bit too hich, but the hops are great piney and floral. Fresh, nice bittered. smooth. Sweetish-bitter aftertaste. Fresh. Great brew but not too exceptional!

Nose is fruit, peach, apricot, with slight boozy. Great flavor, soft pine, resin, with very mild notes of biscuit. Early sweet, mild bitter middle, with a dry bitter finish. Brilliant, thanks to Benny B for hauling it back to Minnesota for me.

on draft in SF. color was perfect for an IPA. Smell not overwhelming but pleasant. a little too much bitterness for my liking, but not bad. Not my favorite IPA out there but still a very good one.

Finally got to try this. Thanks Brian for bringing this back from California. Bottled on 4/21. Perfect golden body with a wonderful white head. Tons of pine in the aroma. Puts you right in the mindset of walking in a pine forest. Huge bitter pine flavor with tons of citrus taste. So good. Seems like an excellent balance of pine and citrus, probably leaning more on the pine side. Oddly, there was still some left in the bottle after the bottle share, so I went back for seconds..

Amazing floral aromas, sweet. Pours with a thin head. Very interesting mouthfeel, almost slippery. Very pleasant flavored and a nice finish that isn't too danky like other DIPAs. Big thanks to Bill for bringing this, traveled 2100 miles, still drank within 2 weeks of bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at APEX. Surpyising subtle. Aroma is grapefruit, minerals. Taste is good, very subtle again, nice balance of malt. Not too hoppy. Nice.

Draught at the Russian River Brewing Co, Santa Rosa, CA.
Clear golden colour with a small white head. Fruity and piney hops... dry bitterness... super balanced hoppiness in the aroma. Strong but smooth. Amazing balance. Dry hops in the flavour. A bit more aggressive hoppiness in the flavour but still extremely balance. Tasty and smooth. Two pints were not enough.

Bottle: I believe this was the second beer I ever traded for, many moons ago. What a time it was. Under two weeks old, too. Golden-amber color, pours with crystal clear clarity... Wow. Soapy, thick, bright white head nestled on top. Insane aroma of pineapple, citrus rind, orange zest, floral leaves, semi-dank pine, a hint of perfume, a touch of white pepper, mango, a touch of honey & crackers. Flavor is hop-city; wet, bitter, assertive, but never harsh. Loaded with pine, resin, & hop oil. Tons of pineapple rind, mango, grapefruit pith, some lightly sugar crusted orange peel. Malt backbone balances nicely without distracting from the hops; lightly toasted biscuits & crackers. Finishes with a very faint sticky hop resin & bitter citrus peel. Absolutely blew me away years ago when I first tried it. While Iíve had some better DIPAs since that time, this is still a goddamn fantastic rendition no matter how you slice it.

Bottle thanks to Bill Young. Pours clear golden with a big frothy slightly offwhite head. Aroma of hops, light grassy hops, malt, grapefruit, orange peel, citrus, peach, pine, light pineapple. Taste is hoppy, grassy, piney, citrus, grapefruit, peach, malt. Very smooth but pretty disappointing overall. Overhyped much, obviously!
