Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap @ both Apex & Horse Brass. 16 and 10iz pour, respectively. Pours apple juice, white foamy head, good lacing. Aroma is heavy hops, grapefruit, little piney I guess. The most outstanding aspect of this beer is that initial flavor just after you swallow: it’s like a fruity bouquet of awesomeness explodes in your mouth-- like Fruit Stripe gum. Amazing smooth for 100 IBU, alcohol is amazingly well hidden. I feel like this could be a session beer, if not for the cost... And ABV. The best IPA I’ve had, or likely will ever have.

Second day in a row at the Monk’s Kettle in San Francisco. Great aroma, reminiscent of Arrogant Bastard, but slightly less upfront. Great beer.

From the source. Lovely orange Reddish hue, nice foamy white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, alcohol. A benchmark for the style but notes of spearmint.

Bottle dated 5/11/16 straight from the brewery. Pours a very clear gold color. Amazing that there are a ton of hops in this and it’s this clear. The hops are quite the star here but has a very malty backbone that just shines. Love it!!

Bottle, 500ml. Consumed fresh (7 weeks after bottling). Clear golden with a frothy offwhite head. Aromas of fruity and floral hops, caramel, resin. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Medium sweet, heavy bitterness. Deep roasted and hoppy character into a stinging bitter finish. Legendary beer.

Bottle, 500ml. A clear golden beer with a medium size white head. Aroma is of citrics, especially grapefruit and lemon, hops and floral hints. Taste is bitter with a perfectly balanced hoppy finish. Medium bodied, smooth and astrigent with a floral and malt character. An extraordinary Imperial IPA.

Fruity, hoppy aroma, fresh squeezed grapefruits, orange peal. Cristal clear, super lacing. Taste super dry, fresh, juicy, hoppy. Pleasant crisp bitterness in the back. No sweetness at all. Super nice long aftertaste. No wonder this beer is legendary, years ago it was probably mind blowing. Now it’s ’just’ awesome.

A - Poured a golden amber color with a significant white head. A - Smells of grapefruit and pine. T - Lots of pine and grapefruit. P - Really nice mouthfeel with medium carbonation. O - I was worried this beer wouldn’t live up to the hype, but I really enjoyed it.
