Kasteel Rouge is a blend of Kasteel Donker and cherry liquor. The mix of these two excellent products creates an exceptional soft beer with references to the dark mother beer.

330ml bottle into a tulip. Pours a clear deep ruby red with a half finger reddish-tan head. Decent head retention forming a thin cap over the beer but lacing is practically nonexistent. Aroma is nearly all cherries. Very reminiscent of cherry Kool-Aid. There are some Belgian Lambic undertones, however, with horse blanket and barnyard letting you know this isn’t a soft drink. Really a unique, inviting aroma. Flavor carries over the characteristics of the aroma with sweet cherry juice along with tartness contributed by the cherries. However underneath the cherry is barnyard funk very typical of a Lambic. This serves to well balance out the fruit and add complexity. While this beer is on the sweet side it never gets cloying and the tartness really helps drinkability. Finish is only slightly sticky and a little drying. Overall, I am very impressed with this beer and wish I would have opened it up over the summer when it was warmer. The alcohol is nowhere to be found and this is really a guzzler. I really need to seek out some more Krieks and see how this stacks up.

Aroma: cherry vodka. Appearance: reddish color and reddish head. Taste: cherry vodka, rough, tart, artificial taste, quite dry. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, vodka finish. Overall: Travesty.

Dark red. No head. Smells cherry juice. More juice in the taste, some alcohol and juice-like sourness. Nice drink, but hardly a beer.

Bottle at the Wellington Arms, Bedford. Pinkish brown, clear, with a notable pinkish white head. Ripe cherry scent. Taste is a bit one-dimensionally fruity sweet, and finish is unfortunately short. However it’s an enjoyable beer which bravely tempers the intensity of Kasteel Donker. Good stuff.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/09/2013. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger foamy light khaki head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big sweet/tart cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sweet/tart cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruit tartness and light yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from fruit tartness as well. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, and lightly syrupy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent fruited Belgian strong dark ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/spicy yeast, and dark malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle at home. Clear dark red, thin light pink head. Tooth wrecking sweet cherry syrup, with a strange herbal bitterness in it, sugar replacement. Very sweet, light bitter, finishes tart. Under medium body, low carbonation, leaves the tongue dry and stale. Way too sweet and that strange herbal taste and sour finish are messing with my tastebuds in a very negative way.

UPDATED: APR 15, 2016 0,33 Bottle, Beerlovers Vienna. Huge amount of cherry inside of its aroma, almost nothing else is present. Dark red color, pretty clear with a medium white head. Sour cherry and sweet taste. Changing its character over time, starting sweet, ending bitter and giving pleasure to your palate. Plus to this one!

Dark red to brown color, small redish head. Strong aroma of cherries. Taste also cherries dominant, light sour, dry and light bitter. Alcohol well hidden. The best fruit beer I tasted.
