In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Pours black with a finger dark tan head. Still one of the darkest beers I’ve ever seen. Smell is a clusterfuck. Got the coco, some spice, some roast and a lot of coffee. Taste is...carrots? Chili and coco, bit of a chalky texture, very well balanced, cinnamon, graham crackers. Magnificent. Loses the red fruit of Marshal but gains so many more flavors. This can stand beside Abyss. It’s a near perfect blend of perfect flavors. Rich, but not overpowering. Thick but not heavy. Delicious and beautiful.

[5698-20130817] Bottle. Roasty fruited smoked chocolate aroma. Black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Chocolatey Worcestershire sauce roasted soya flavour has a long-lasting roasted aftertaste. Full body. Good. (8/3/8/4/16) 3.9

Bottle: Oily, deep black body & thick looking like all Cigar City stouts. Creamy, velvety, deep tan head fades quick to a super thick, chunky collar. Aroma is nice & complex; deep chocolates, both sweet & slightly bitter, roasted malt, leather, light cinnamon, a hint of chili pepper spice, almost like green peppers, & a bit of brown sugar with some faint cream. Taste is pretty nice; creamy with a nice mix of chocolate & cinnamon graham cracker. Think Teddy Grahams. Light vanilla, brown sugar, bittersweet cocoa, & a finish with a light hint of cinnamon sticks. Chili peppers are very faint, not leaving any real spiciness on the palate. Hint of roast, lingering cinnamon in the aftertaste with a touch of sweet milk chocolate. I really enjoyed this one.

Horizontal with some other whales: Dark Lord ’12, Darkness ’13, Cinnamon Roll’d Wake ’n Bake ’13, Hunahpu ’14 -- Poured into a snifter sampler. This beer is phenomenal, my favorite of the four listed. The complexity with the spices and adjuncts is just incredible. The closest thing I’ve come to a perfect Stout.

Schokoladig malziger Antrunk mit an Weihnachten erinnernde Aromen. Leicht dunkel fruchtig, minimale Schärfe. Vollmundig, auch im Nachgeschmack weiterhin sehr malzig. 11/13/12/13/12/13

10 oz draft pour at ChurchKey during their Sierra Nevada Beer Camp event. Black with tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate fudge, cinnamon, caramel, vanilla. Tastes of cinnamon, chocolate, light peppers and oak. Full body with a dry finish.

Truly superior. The way this comes together with dark chocolate, some licorice anise, and something almost like biscotti. Pours black with great head and lacing. Tons of roast. Texture is velvety and thick. Bittersweet finish. Tap at Churchkey.

Black with a small brown head, quite syrupy looking. Aroma is chocolate, toasted coconut, marshmallow, hint of chili, vanilla, coffee. Full bodied, rich and spicy on the palate with a little chili burn on the finish. Taste is chocolate, chili, vanilla, coconut.

Very good, but vanilla came across too strongly and made the beer almost too sweet! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
