In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Bottle. Pours a pitch black color with a really dark brown head. The aroma is of vanilla, fudge, chocolate, cocoa, gingerbread, coffee, roasted malt, dark fruits, molasses and lots of nice deserty aromas. Flavors is as amazing as the aroma, it really reminds me of gingerbread, with honey and ginger and cinnamon spice notes, vanilla, dark and sweet chocolate notes, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, fudge, dark fruits and molasses, with a hint of the chili that evolves the more you sip in it. The body is full with a nice sticky and creamy mouth feel. Overall an amazing and different Imperial Stout, I really want to try this BA!

Big aroma of cinnamon, raisins, almond, earthy cacao with light blackcurrant and chili notes. Taste is upfront a cinnamon bomb, a mellow spice goes through your pallet while the beers is overloaded on chocolate. Quite sweet, and heavily roasted, also blackcurrant and raisin notes with a earthiness which seems to be from the cacao and the chilis, has an amazing dark dark brown head with a nice creamy thick mouthfeel.

Many thanks Al. Black color with a minimal and quickly diminishing beige head. Aroma has notes of cinnamon, black chocolate, vanilla, barrel notes and dark fruits with roasty notes. Flavor is slightly sweet, notes of coffee beans, where’s the alcohol?, OMG, awesome beer..., vanilla, roasty malts, light chili notes. The final is slightly sweet with roasty notes, notes of chili and ripe fruit. Creamy and smooth mouthfeel on palate. No doubt, one of my best beers I’ve ever tasted.

Pours dark brown with a dark tan head. The aroma has chocolate, bitter roast, bitter roast, light pepper meat and a hint of spice. IT has a medium / full body with light semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with smooth roast, cinnamon, light pepper, alcohol, peppery spice and chocolate. The finish has some earthy hops added. Pretty solid. Thanks to gregwilsonstl for sharing this one.

From notes. 750 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. 2014 vintage. The pour is a thick dirty motor oil black with a finger of dark mocha head that fades foam ring, leaving no lace behind. The aroma is beautiful. There is a ton of cinnamon in front of a light cocoa and a lot of vanilla. The chilies don't really dominate, but offer a good peppery spiciness that is incredibly well balanced. The cinnamon comes back and is delightful. I love the smell on this. The flavor is great. Copious amounts of cinnamon up front and they ease through a nice pepper transition into a soft cocoa and vanilla, before reentering the cinnamon realm. The fact that the chilies are reserved makes this so much better. The mouth feel is thick and viscous. Great carbonation help it just cling to the mouth in a never ending film. The aftertaste is all cinnamon and subtly it moves through a good chocolate and vanilla lingering finish. Damn good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wow! Poured from bomber black as night. Small tan head. Aroma was dark fruit, coffee, cinnamon and ginger. Flavor followed and changed as you dark and the glass warmed up. Complex, a little heat? good smooth but rich mouth feel.

Originally rated from a small sample in 2013; revised with 2014 bottle on March 2015. A touch too sweet. Chili still evident. Amazing complexity and delicious aroma.
