COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like India Pale Ale, Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high percentages of malt and hops to help them withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, and oats. A portion of the batch has been aged in whiskey barrels, then blended with fresh ale before bottling. Za Vas!

Bottle from South Bay. Let this one warm up. Poured jet black with an impressive thick, creamy tan head. Sticky lacing. Heavy chocolate and roasted malt nose. Smoke, leather, oak, some bourbon, and oats as well. Velvety smooth mouthfeel with light carbonation. Love how it coats your mouth. Bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt hits you first. More sweet than bitter, but held in check. Rich coffee flavor (without the acidity), anise, caramel, and creamy milk-chocolate flavors come through. Hints of bourbon and an earthy smokiness pop occasionally. No soy sauce or wooden flavors, just a thick, lovely stout. The alcohol is well masked, but gives a pleasant warmth. Please brew more of this.

Bottle from 2013 opened September 22, 2014. Prunes, raisins, booze. Pours black with a dark tan head that leaves very quickly. Slight effervescent a and a cocoa bitterness followed up by a fruity boozy sweetness that smooths out nicely and leaves a warming on the back of the tongue and throat.

My wife bought this bottle for me for Valentines Day 2014 and I was saving for a special occasion. That turned out to be passing an important milestone in our pregnancy with twins (due in Nov). Pitch black, thick, a ton of roasty, coffee, sweet malt flavor with a bitter finish. I really like the blend because this beer was not overwhelmed by whiskey flavor, although it was prominent. A fantastic beer for a fantastic occasion.

Bottle: Thanks jdb288: Vintage 2013: Served in a Duvel glass: Black beer with a medium sized brown head. Aromas of bay leaf, some roast, some liquorice, lesser chocolate, light whiskey, marzipan, marshmellows, dark chocolate, some fudge and sweet soy. Flavours of bitters, roast, some liquorice, light peppery, light wood, some caramel, dark chocolate, light whiskey, some grass roast, rye, light soy, mocha and some sticky coal. Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, grass, roast, some bay leaf and herbal roast. Low carbo, creamy oily sticky mouthfeel, full bodied and a sticky oily spicy texture. Very nice beer, quite balanced, loads of flavours and a good spicy (alcohol) kick!

On tap at Cugino’s. It poured a jet black color with a tan head. The aroma was of whiskey, dark fruit and some dark chocolate. The taste was of whiskey, dark chocolate, roast, coffee, dark fruit and caramel. The whiskey from the barrel aged portion is really well balanced, not too little and not too much. Awesome.

Finally able to nab this one. As I missed out on it last Spring when it showed up on growler at the Breeze In. Luckily, it came back around and here’s my take on this one. Out of a grumbler from Breeze In (Lemon Creek location, Juneau AK). This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a soft and somewhat refined bubbly off white to slight tan slim head. This head died within about less than forty seconds. The lacing was there in a slightly weird messy way, but it was there. The smell started off with a boozy roasty coffee cocoa sort of blend. As it warmed, a light plum entered in. The taste was mainly boozy and sweet but did have a decent roasty quality about it. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with more of a sipper aspect to it. The carbonation was slightly there but allowed a decent harshness to pervade. Overall, I say this was a good Imperial Stout it draws out all of the aspects as any Imperial Stout should. This would make a great night capper.

Wish lister from John’s Market in Portland. Last year’s was 40% barrel-aged, not 10 (as in the description) but tasted like it was 100%. I was hoping for more nuances to come through this barreled blend, but it ended up being far more barrel heavy than expected. That said, it was damn good. Lucious and decadent, and got better as it warmed. All kinds of flavors battling for attention in there...rye, chocolate malt, booze, oak, anise. Good stuff.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours an opaque dark brown, almost black with a nice tan head. Coffee and bourbon aroma. Rich roasted malt flavor, along with coffee, licorice, dark chocolate and bourbon again. Real busy, but great!

Jet black pour with a tan head. Big roasty aromas with notes of coffee and cocoa. Wonderful notes of whiskey and oak as well. Flavor is a perfect balance between roasted malts and whiskey/oak notes. This brew is so well balanced. Rich and robust finish. Awesome beer.

From a 2013 bottle. Pours dark brown with a creamy, fizzy tan head. Tastes like chocolate, syrup, molasses, light coffee bitterness, and booze. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like booze, chocolate, vanilla, and dry spice.
