COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

02.02.09 I thought it was very good. Great taste with body and the perfect aftertaste. Made me want to come back to ratebeer so I could rate it.

Originally reviewed: 8/7/09. Poured this bottle into my pilsner glass. Pours a ruby-tinted tawny brown. Good-sized off-white head on top. Pretty good retention, but little lacing. Smells like caramel, bread, and hints of butterscotch. The mouth is a little thin and slick. Carbonation level seems to be on the low side. Kind of weak. The flavor is pretty average. Plenty of caramel sweetness and bready malts are there, but it’s just not that bold. I think the drinkability level is pretty high for this beer. As it is not offensive in any way, I could see myself having a few of these at a time. I enjoyed this much more than the regular Bock from these guys.

Shiner’s best beer but that is not saying a lot. I can’t be too hard on them since shiner bock is what got me into beer tasting

Well done for Shiner and a little more "umph" than most their other beers. Good amount of hops and a deep dark color.

From notes. 12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a shaker. Pours a dark amber with white head. Sweet malty caramel aroma. Taste is about the same. Light bodied and thin textured. Not bad, probably one of the best Shiners I’ve had but thats not saying much.

Has an attempt at an interesting aroma (and I mean that sincerely). Just too faint to pick up with non-dog noses. Pretty color, but without real spark of luminesnce. Mouthfeel is not bad once the beer is warmed up, but strangely has burn even though ABV is low. Not completely balanced between hops and malt. However, Not a bad beer at all, found my hand reaching for the glass often. Just tends to feel slightly 2D and seems to lack some needed complexity that would push it over the 4 point threshold.

Leicht herber, vorwiegend aber süßmalziger Antrunk, platt wirkend. Weiter süß-malzig mit herben Einflüssen, minimal schokoladig. Zum Ende etwas würziger. Schneller Ausklang. Nichts Besonderes. 6/8/8/9/7/8

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2011 Kinda has the fullness of a doppelbock, the maltiness of it too, but not quite. Tastes like a really big American Dark Lager, although it did have some of the malt fire that good doppelbocks do. Not bad seeing how easy it (was) to find.

One of the better Shiner anniversary brews, but still doesn’t begin to hold a candle to some of the great Doppelbocks out there. Not very drinkable despite the low ABV.

Poured into a pils glass. 3.5 A: Clear dark amber brown color. Two fingers of frothy head with average retention and very little lacing. 3.5 S: Graininess with a tab bit of funk. Dark malts, caramel, and a bit of pungency. 3.5 T: Plum and raisin come out real big, which is surprising considering I didn’t detect any in the nose. Sweetness maltiness to it, but overall well balanced. 3.5 M: Medium body. Good carbonation, smooth, a bit creamy. Nothing spectacular and nothing deficient. 4.0 D: I wouldn’t mind having another. I’m surprised as hell. This is a solid offering. I’ll give credit to Shiner for showing me they can make a good brew. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-12-2009 03:11:38
