COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

This is what you call a bouquet. There’s syrup and molasses and citrus and honey and just a whole mish mosh of all sorts of fruits and sugars. The flavor is just as colorful with a strong initial punch of sweet followed by a bitter bite. The palate is wonderfully smooth. You think it will finish harshly, but it doesn’t. Looks great too!

Chappy's in Dayton, OH on tap. Delicious. Lasts long on the palate. Oak, bourbon and caramel. Perfectly bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 oz. Bottle poured fresh on 5/24/12. Oddly not labeled as a barley wine, but the label description on the neck does ring true. Lots of candy sugar! Citrus, saltwater taffy scent. Big frothy head over a dark brown pour. Medium bodied palate with a silky, creamy texture. Sugar fronted taste, sweet caramel, bitter hop, and a maple syrup tinted finish. A little hot in the bitter notes and finish. I might pick up an extra one of these to stick in the cellar.

Malty like a stout, beautiful black pour, mild hint of the warmth of the alcohol behind, also nice little bitter finish. Very respectable.

Draft at Chappys. Nice, very drinkable tor the style. Just enough hops to remind you that this an American brewer. True to style with a touch of sweetness.

Poured a nice mahogany. Little to no head. Nice big body with nice subtle hop profile just enough to let you know its there. Nice sweet subtle favors of malty goodness. Big thumbs up from me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Originally reviewed: 6/2/10. Grabbed a bottle of this from the Wine Merchant in Findlay, OH. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours a very cloudy dark amber/mahogany. A large, frothy off-white head caps it off. Excellent retention. Left lots of lace and sip rings. Scents of sharp pine, grapefruit, candy, honey. This smells like hop candy. Love it. The body is creamy, but a little thinner than I’d like. Some mild carbonation on the tongue. I guess this bottle has been on the shelves for a few months. I can only imagine that the hops were more pronounced in flavor when fresh. They have faded for sure. There is still a mildly bitter aftertaste, but the malts have come to the forefront. Some toasted caramel and toffee noted. This was still a great beer, I just wish I could have tried it earlier.

Pours a dark reddish brown with medium khaki head. The aroma is sweet malt, caramel, spicy, floral, and slightly fruity. The taste is really well balanced between malt and hops with a really nice firm hop bitterness. This is a quite enjoyable barley wine.

Bomber shared by mattyb83 pours a murky amber/brown with a thin caramel head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, hops, and raisins. Taste starts with slight hops and citrus followed by rich earthy caramel, toffee, and chocolate malts, finishing sweet with hop spice. Nice.

Bottle. Murky, chocolate brown color that looks downright awful. This looks like there is a bit of foam sitting atop a bristol 7 diarrhea. I hope things get better from here, as this may be one of the worst looking beers I have seen. Seems to be a pretty hop-forward barleywine. Seems like a combination of toffee, lemon pinesol, and caramel. It’s pretty rough on the nose. Flavor is pretty gross. Raisins, dust, some orange, and caramel. Light to medium body, with a slightly bitter finish. This is just a big miss for me. I had read many great things about this beer, but it just was not enjoyable. I felt the same way after drinking the first bottle I had, too.

Poured into a snifter from a 650ml bottle undated.

A: Murky brown body with no head, very thin tan ring.

S: Sweet caramel and raisin.

T: Intense sweetness of caramel up-front into cocoa with raisins throughout. Candied sugar and alcohol finish, really sweet, but not over the top.

M: Thick with little carbonation.

O: Intense, lots of flavors but it’s hard to finish a bottle.
