Benno of the Stift Engelszell Trappist brewery from Engelhartszell an der Donau. Benno Stumpf was Abbot from 1953 to 1966 at the Abbey. The color is an orange red copper color. It has a good stable foam head and the smell is malty and hoppy. Taste stands out for its bitterness and is light sweet and yeasty.

Wow, never seen so many yeast sediments in a before. Taste is not bad, medium carbonation and sweet-sharpish finish.

Bottle. Pours murky dark amber, with very small frothy beige head, caramel aroma, lightly bitter caramelized malt taste, thick body, medium caramel finish. It was good but since the bottle I had was dated 2014, I expect a fresher sample would be much better.

Bottle bought online from slijterijhetfust.nl Poured a cloudy deep amber brown colour with a large off-white head. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts, spice and dark fruit. High sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium-full bodied, sticky texture, with average carbonation.

Poured an attractive Amber. Aroma and flavor were a bit of a surprise as both were sour with the expected fruitiness being as much sour cherry as plum, to the point of the traditional Belgian yeasty flavors taking a back seat. Good, but not at all what was expected. I actually got up to make sure I was poured the right beer, but there was nothing else it could have been. Not a lot of people note the sourness, and those that do say it’s light. This wasn’t puckering or anything, but not light either. I wonder if there’s qc issues. Maybe one day I’ll get a bottle and compare...

Bottle at the Hemelvaart Bier Café in Ayton. Pours amber with a big frothy cream head. Fruity aroma. The taste has marmalade, peppery spice and a slightly bitter finish. Nice.

Amber with lots of yeast sediment. Stable light beige head with good lacing. Fruity aroma. Taste is sweet with a dry finish. Velvety mouthfeel. Quite different from other trappist brews. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Look: copper cloudy with unstable white head and yeast particles. Aroma: spicy, ethery, light sour notes, dusty spicy grassy hops. Taste: almost dry with fruit tartness and light to moderate-light spicy bitterness. Flavour: yeast, spices, ripe fruits. Slightly boozy finish. Good with pleasant tartness.

Murky, dark copper pour. Floral aroma. Taste was a bit unexpected, decent bitterness with a touch of sweet in the finish.

Quite different from other trappist beers. Some fruity aromas wich almost smell distilled. I like it.
