Benno of the Stift Engelszell Trappist brewery from Engelhartszell an der Donau. Benno Stumpf was Abbot from 1953 to 1966 at the Abbey. The color is an orange red copper color. It has a good stable foam head and the smell is malty and hoppy. Taste stands out for its bitterness and is light sweet and yeasty.

In short: correct belgian ale.
Pours murky amber, lots of sediments, with nice off white head. Moderate head retention, poor lacing. Yeasty, banana, malty, caramel, spicy aromas. Medium body, average to high carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is fruity, yeasty, alcohol noticed. Sweet aftertaste. Enjoyable.

Pours orange with a firm head, quite a bit of residual. Smells of honey and butterscotch. Taste is dominated by roasted honey, brown sugar and alcohol. Finish is long but sticky and full of sugar

Amber colored beer with a firm off-white head. Medium carbonation. Caramel and yeast. Together with with a bitter and dry aftertaste. An awkward beer. Not really sure how to rate this. It has some character but it feels a bit incomplete and ’funny’. No bad beer though. It isn’t a great beer either.

Stift Engelszell "Benno" [Belgian saison 7.2%] on tap at the Beer Trappe in Lexington. A hazy deep amber body topped by a modest but durable off-whie head. Aroma: sweet with caramel, some farmhouse/yeast, cinnamon and other spices. Flavor: spicy, but not so much as the nose suggests. Distinct and unlike anything I’ve had before, yet not extreme or challenging. Near medium body with medium carbonation. O: modestly enjoyable but highly interesting. ABV mostly hidden in the nose, but not in the mouth

Bottle@Home. Not quite sure what this is supposed to be. A clone of Orval maybe? But without the funkiness? Thin, too bitter, yeasty, unbalanced.
