3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2015-10-31. Murky dark brown body, small tan head fades quickly. Malty aroma with tangy alcoholic accents. Flavour is similar, malty core is briefly sweet then dry with alcohol and tangy fruity quality. Smooth medium bodied palate, carbonation is a touch low for the style. 3+ Just okay, it shows promise but lacks the subtlety and cohesiveness of say a Rochefort. 7/3/7/3/14 Bottle from the LCBO cellared several months, Toronto.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown with a reddish tint. Almost no head. Spicy nose, plums. Aromas of wine, burnt caramel, malt, sour cherries. Quite an earthy finish with a lot of alcohol

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Was in a dark bar (the great Hopleaf in Chicago), but this looks like a normal Belgium quad. Has the Belgium yeast mixed with dark fruits like plum, malt, and a chocolate/toffee taste. Sometimes reminds me of a wine or brandy feel to it. A bit of an oily texture and mouthfeel, with medium low carbonation.
I was unfamiliar with this beer, but I am glad I tried it. I will choose a Westmalle or Chimay over it any time, but will never turn down a bottle of this.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

Alright, this one is clearly the bedt of the three. Pours tan, ruby edges, light tan head. Some raisin, plum. Solid sweetness medium to full body.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Foam is very nice and full, but decreases over time for a light layer of foam that seem to last forever. The aroma is mostly of a roasted malt. The taste is very delicate and composed of so many ingredients to the taste buds at the beginning can not even keep up. After some getting used to I discover a delicate chocolate malt toffee in the background. My favorite coffee is Wiener Melange (mild coffee with cream and cocoa), and it is precisely the symphony of flavor notes I also find in Gregorius. A lighter roasted malt flavor is felt along with a hop bitterness just balances the so nice to malt ago remains the beer’s main theme. The slightly sharp flavor that greets me at the end may be partly yeast merit, but I’m leaning towards the view that alcohol is high value becomes a little play here. I am basically very excited about Gregory, but several of the other Trappist Bier think I carry on more authenticity and genuineness.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 28, 2015 It pours a dark, reddish brown, with a thickness like good juice. The foam is decent, but quickly fades to nothing. The aroma is dominated by malt, but also very fruity notes. The taste is also dominated by a heavy play between malts and fruit, like blackberries. A note of alcohol is there, but very subtle. It just adds to the rich, full body. Hell of a good beer, but so heavy I?ll save the other three for special occasions.
Bottle ordered directly from Stift Engelszell.
