Deep beautiful colour, unfortunately I was a bit too enthusiastic on the pour, so I got a bit too much sediments in the glass from this bottle conditioned beer. Traditional dark fruit and alcohol notes in the nose. Thick, creamy, rich mouthfeel that just explodes in flavours from the dark fruits. Sharp bitterness along with a lively carbonation and a sticky sweetness. Not a great fan of trappist beers, but I’ve had a few -- Westmalle, Orval and Rochefort 8 and 10 to name some of them. Will easily prefer a Rochefort 8 as a treat to myself. This one was a little too much fermented cherries for me.

Bottle from Dranken Pauwels. New Trappist beer. Pours deep reddish dark brown with some clarity and an off whtie head which disspipates quickly. Nose is very nice. Nose is very sweet and malty with a lot of dried fruit. Prune, raisin, sultana, chocolate, caramel, very slight lactic, yeast if more like an ale yeast. Taste is sweet, dried fruit, prune, raisin, sultana, earthy hop bitter, plum. It’s very sweet but has some nice bitternes from the hops to counter it. Rich and very fruity. Shade too sweet for me.

.33l pour from room-temperature bottle into an Engelszell glass while sitting on the banks of the Danube after visiting the abbey. Light brown, opaque, with a bubbly light tan head. Considerable carbonation. Nose is estery, fruity, raisin, plum, nutty, biscuit, a little roasty, and definite honey. Full body, though a bit thin for the size, lots of carbonation, crisp. Very flavorful. Strong boozy notes. Plum, raisin, nuts, licorice, definite honey, maybe a hint of cocoa, vanilla. Sweet, bitter, dry, tart, and sour, all at once. Wonderful complexity. Strong alcohol present on the finish.

Buena quad.

Draft to taster at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a hazy caramel brown color with a medium sized, creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, ripe fruits, prunes, raisins, Belgian candi, a hint of spice, hides the abv nicely, this was not something I was looking for but enjoyed quite a bit.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a generous head with OK retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of caramelized malt with light dry fruits with quite a bit of residual sugar notes. Taste is also a mix between caramelized malt with some dry fruits notes with quite a bit of residual sugar. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad bit lacks cohesion and balance as well as those candy ester that the other Trappist have.

Smells of nuts, dark fruit, caramel and alcohol. Pours rather hazy with a very dark amber color. The taste is very strong of burnt sugar, caramel, dates and liquorice. Not the best Trappist but fits the trademark.

A fantastic quad. Pours a rich dark brown. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, burnt caramel. Very similar flavour. With some vinous qualities. Very nice.

Aroma is very malty, with some nice plum aromas and also some molasses/toffee. The hops are pretty subdued and very much dominated by the malt, though there is an underlying backbone of bitterness. The head is small and off-white. The beer is a quite dark brown with a hazy, almost murky appearance. The beer is fairly full bodied, with a slightly creamy and alcoholic texture. The carbonation is just a bit on the lively side. The finish is long, moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Overall a good example of a Belgian quadrupel - very malty, sweet but in a way that works well, nice flavors of molasses, toffee and plum.
