Pours dark brown with fairly dense cream-tan head that disiipates to a few mm. Initially lacking in aroma, muscavado sugar and shredded wheat notes appear on warming. In the mouth its thick with a fairly low level of carbonation, sweet, warming and some milk chocolate and prune notes. Long sweet honey finish.

From Austria’s only Trappist brewery. Pours cacao brown from the bottle and leaves a tan head that fizzes and dissipates. Impenetrable. No evident lacing. Aroma is a heady concoction of rich caramel, honey, chocolate, and cognac. A good start. The taste fails to follow through at the same level. Warm, alcoholic, again cognac, but also raw alcohol set atop chocolate and caramel. Not a bad beer but not the same complexity of some of the better Trappist beers I’ve tasted. It certainly fails to disguise the 10.2 ABV nearly as well. Finishes bitter with alcoholic notes. Heavy bodied. Good. Not great.

A really nice trappist style beer. Lots of spice and dark fruit. Deep reddish brown with a thick off white head.

Murky brown pour, brief head. The nose smells of deep dark fruit bathed in dark malts. Sweet. The middle continues the role of sweet concentrated fruit; currants, raisins, and plums. The finish is like a nice Sherry.

HOME 20160709: 33 cl bottle, 9.7% ABV, BBF 06.08.16: A slightly cloudy beer with a rubbish-red colour and a good dark brown foam layer. The smell is sweet (candy sugar-like), dark malt, caramel, some chocolate and malt bitterness. A sweet taste with dark malt and candy sugar. Alcoholic. Also fruit (raisins) and red wine/port. In the finish a malty bitterness is coming up, which give the beer a chocolate finish. The palate is in this way sticky sweet and slightly malty bitter dry. Complex aroma and taste. Maybe because the beer is near the best before. Nice.

A bottle from Privado, near Gu Ting subway station, drunk at home. I was a little wary of this one because of the honey in the recipe. However, it was not too sweet in any way and I really enjoyed it. A good, solid Trappist which I would gladly drink again [old notes].
