Pours dark brown with fairly dense cream-tan head that disiipates to a few mm. Initially lacking in aroma, muscavado sugar and shredded wheat notes appear on warming. In the mouth its thick with a fairly low level of carbonation, sweet, warming and some milk chocolate and prune notes. Long sweet honey finish.

Bottle at Ölrepubliken. Very tasty and different trappist beer. Aroma of caramel, taste of caramel! Like liquid candy! Really good beer!

Bottle. Don’t understand why this beer is not rated higher. Deep dark, cloudy, amber color with a hugh off white head. Aroma is complex with hints of dry fruit and honey. Taste is also complex. Flavors of fruit cake hints of vanilla.

Brownish coloured with nice red glare, small beige head, plums and light alcohol in the nose. Moderate malty, light spicy and quite fruity (plum and banana) with a way too strong and unbalanced alcohol presence.

Gregorius has a vaport train out the bottle neck, a thin, cream-colored head, a dark brown appearance, minimal lacing, and an incredible amount of pretty large tan chunks which settle at the bottom, making this beer almost a semi-solid beverage. The aroma is intense, and the drinker will pick up a multiplicity of smells, including grape skin, wine, vinegar, Maraschino cherries, acid, duck sauce, yeast, brown bread, bread crust, honey, lo mien noodles, and spice. Taste is likewise complex, with flavors including all of the above, plus smoked pork, Warheads sweet & sour candies, pine oil, licorice, prunes, butter, and assorted spices. Mouthfeel is heavy and chewy, and Gregorius finishes wet and cloying and munch-able. Overall, this is an outstanding beer, at a minimum, and I recommend it, in the strongest possible terms. RJT

330ml bottle served in a Chimay chalice. Best before 02.05.2015. Most probably bottled in 2013 (end of 2012, maybe). A: Pours a dark and bit cloudy brown color. Some small chunks can be seen when it’s poured. Forms a solid creamy beige head with low retention and only few lacings left in the glass. However a thin layer remains forever on the top S: Roasted and very fruity, mainly. Strong notes of dry dark fruits like raisins and plums. Strong roastiness too: notes of coffee. Strong notes of caramel and candy sugar too. Very bready yeast profile, quite belgian-like. Some alcohol but quite mild considering the high ABV T: Slightly sweet and roasted upfront. Less sweet than expected. Very fruity. Strong notes of caramel and roasted malts. Bubblegum sensation. Very bready yeasts. End is mild bitter and also a bit spicy after all M: Heavy, creamy and a bit molasses body. Bready bittersweet aftertaste O: Good drinkability. The Trappist stamp creates some expectations that this beer cannot accomplish. An authentic Belgian Strong Dark Ale, however, a less remarkable Trappist Ale [ BA Review @ 10/20/2013 ]

Pours dark reddish brown with little foam. Intense malt, raisin and coffee aroma. Powerful flavour with good hops. Excellent.

Oelbas (190) - DENMARK - OCT 8, 2014
