Austrian Trappists? Dark brown with garnet edges and a thin beige head with moderate lacing. Mild smoke and burnt sugar on the nose. Molasses notes and some dark fruits. Some chicory and/or anise notes. Taste offers almost a rye-like spiciness and more dark fruits--raisins, figs, plums. Complex, but a bit too much of everything. Too sweet as well, I think.

Pours a five+ finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Opaque dark brown color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Dark fruit and honey nose, flavor is more molasses than honey and earthy coffee. Pricey at $6.99 for a 330ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA. Brewed Nov 2012.

From the 11.2 fl. oz. bottle that is stamped "Brewed in Year 2012/11." The pour is a vaguely cloudy but very dark tree bark brown with a large mocha head that softly sits on top. The aroma is a little boozy at first considering it is 9.7% ABV but after that first whiff I pick up more dark coffee and chocolate malts, yeast, and a dark cherry or black currant note. The body is full. The booziness is well-integrated into the taste and barely noticeable like it was on the nose. Licorice and dark fruits too and a moderately lingering finish.

Bottle from Eithcubes. This one leaked a little around the cap in transit, but no evidence of infection or loss of carbonation. Murky, chestnut pour with a billowy tan head. Good lacing. Fig, cinnamon, plum, and some cacao in the aroma. A touch of clove. The flavor adds some nice rose character and some faint milk chocolate. Body is fairly light with lively carbonation. Malty with no real bitterness except from the darker malt. Slightly sticky finish with faint, lingering alcohol. Exceptional beer!

11.2 ounce bottle purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. I forgot there was another brewery that has added the Trappist name. The aroma on this is a little strange. There is almost a little smokiness to the aroma of this beer, as well as a little burnt rubber. Some raisiny sweet, pitted fruits are also present, as well as a bit of an olive character. Strange aroma. Slightly transparent mahogany body with a yellow-orange head that is large, really fizzy, and quickly dissipating. This beer starts quite sweet with hints of raisins, figs, and prunes. This becomes quite sticky, and rather chewy in the middle. Thick, mouthfeel. Finishes with more floral sweetness. Light roastiness late. This is overly one-dimensional and way too sweet.

Bottle, 330 ml, poured into a trappist glass at home.4.90€. ABV 9,7% Small beige head, with good retention, on top of a very dark brown body. Somewhat heavy aroma, with lots of caramel malts, a bit of dark fruits and some hints of the alcohol. Taste is quite complex, it begins sweet but with a light acidity as well, then turns to mildly bitter. Dark dried fruits, black grapes. Quite nice but a bit too sweet. Very thick on the body, with the right amount of carbonation. Sticky on the palate. Overall, not a bad one, I found it to be a bit too "heavy" for me.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark malts with roasted hints, a little spiciness, some floral malts, honey, and notes of dark fruits. Flavor about the same. Smooth texture. An interesting quad.
