2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, USA - APR 12, 2006
(12 oz bottle: Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA) Sweet, roasty, toasty, very milk chocolaty, but also very toffee-like to the point of being the dominant flavor. The butter is also very noticeable in the nose, and is a big distraction for me. Another distraction is the mild sourness, both in flavor and nose, but it smells a bit like soured fruit, not good. Medium brown, semi-transparent except through the center. Small, light-tan head dissipates fully after several minutes, leaving no lacing. Lose the strong butteriness and this might be a decent porter. Wouldn’t mind trying this on tap someday since I’ve had a few issues with English Ales bottles in the past and this one seems abnormally buttery.

Too light, no after taste, no aroma. Wouldn’t bother with it unless you want a light, tasteless brew

Tap. Dark brown pour. Aroma of dark chocolate. Taste is vinous and roasty with a good amount of dark chocolate. Like the other beers at the brewery, the body is light and the amount of carbonation is low. Good beer.

Tap at the Fish Hoppers Restaurant in Monterey, CA. Pours dark brown with ruby glints and a big creamy light tan head. Nice chocolate aroma. Near med body. Flavor is chocolate, smooth burnt malt, and a light, light touch of coffee with some herby hop. Finishes nearly dry and nicely bitter.

12oz bottle -
Found most, if not all, of the English Ales while on a recent stop in Monterey. Stopped off at Bottles and Bins and they had a great selection. The beer is really a nice porter. A mixed aroma of powdered chocolate, metal, dark fruit, and leather. Flavor has a nice combo of licorice, dark chocolate and light coffee bean. There is some bitterness that reminds me of molasses/burnt sugar. Probably the black patent. Very nice pour with a black body and a light tan 1" head. Tasty beer.

~pours clear black with red tints, small off white head.
~Roasty chocolate coffee flavor, slight astringency. Well balanced.
~Med body, med CO2, malty roasty lingering bitterness. The CO2, is a bit high.
~Enjoyable porter. Could drink a few of these.

Cask at Toronado. A pitch black beer with a bubbly brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of milk chocolate as well as medium notes of roasted malt, leading to a lightly bitter finish. Very smooth mouthfeel.
