COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Has also been available bottle conditioned.
A black beer traditionally referred to as 'dinner ale', derived from pale ale. Created using a specially produced black malt and a selection of specialised sugars, the ingredients combine with a strong roast malt taste to produce a memorable stout-like beer with lurking hints of honey adding to the roundness of the flavor.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Out Of The Vaults, Leicester. A black beer with a loose white head. The aroma is fairly thin with just a hint of honey standing out. The taste is sweet and fruity and again honeyed. Some candy licquorice and sticky tar. Acceptable but a bit odd.

Almost stout-like in appearance. Little scent and quite thin. Tastes of roasted hops, raspberries, dark chocolate and burnt sugars. Moderately bitter with a dry finish. Good.

Half pint handpulled at Market Porter, London Bridge. Black red-tinged body under a thin head. Dark malty aroma. Roasty impression with taste of raisin and dark chocolate. Well rounded mouthfeel (01.02.2007).

Cask gravity at White Cliffs BF 2007. I had this many years ago at this festival and thought that it was fantastic at the time. This was less good. Black colour with dark brown edges. thin beige head. Stout/porter slightly sour aroma. Some very syrupy intense malt. Goodish juicy finish. Some good bitterness on finish. I rather like it. NIce lingering finish, but not the in your face brilliance that I remembered.

Cask : The Pig and Whistle, Worcester. A swwetiss balck beer with roasted malt undertones. Its lakes flavor for a 5.2, nevertheless, its a nice easy drinking beer that you couldnt quite call stout. Or mild to think of it. Its almost its on class.

I liked this one so much. I loved watching all the acrobatics going on in the glass when it was poured. Extrememly dark but also extremely creamy. I did not have the bad acid taste like alot of people that have reviewed this brew.

An everest of a head when first poured! A wonderful craggy mountain full of shaggy goats and mysterious caves and ski slopes. The colour of this mountain is a delicious dark cream edged and bubbled through with a satanic blackness. The head is magnificent! The beer itself started well, roasty toasty with a promise of more roasted barley flavours - however it soon settled down into something slightly sour and acidic. This is a bottle conditioned beer and I feel something must have gone slightly wrong - the head was too big (and kept on rising) and the sour acid taste suggest a bad bottle. The blurb claims this is based on a recipe dating back to 1850, originating from the brewers’ great-great aunt in Cumbria, and should be classed as a black dinner ale. I might try it again.

Bottle conditioned. Jet black with moderate coffee coloured head made up of big bubbles that soon dissipate. Chocolate aroma, more chocolate in the mouth along with raisin and a roasty sour edge. Finish is dry and tart with some more roast malts.

black colour, big creamy head with a nice lace, roasted, black chocolate aroma, medium-bodied with a strange and unpleasant acidity - was my beer infected ?
