3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 tombyars (679) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - DEC 8, 2011
Tasted this in Spooners Bar, Porthmadog in July 2009. Jet black in colour with ruby tones around the edges and a thick creamy buff head. Strong aroma of roast malt and instant coffee evident. Creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a roast grain flavour with mocha coffee and bitter chocolate flavours, along with a big juicy base of blackcurrant fruit. Interesting wood smoke flavour to the hop resins in the long aftertaste. Sweet molasses appear in the long complex malty finish. Tastes stronger than the abv suggets. Well recommended.

On gravity at the Tewkesbury Beer festival, 4/02/2011. Jet black, with a slick of tan passing as a head. Sweet, berry fruit and chocolate aroma, with robust roasted malts. Flavour of oat grains, prune and charcoal, with some sweet black currant in the finish. Enjoyable.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2010) Black colour with ruby hints when seen through light. Brief head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of coffee, dark fruit, dark bread and hints of chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with dark fruit, raisins, prunes, dark bread and mild coffee bitterness. Medium body, quite sweet. Nice and well made porter.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DruncanVeasey (4800) - NUNEATON, Conference North, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - MAR 30, 2009
Cask, Cov 09. Pretty much pitch with an attractive but shortlived little yellowy attempt at a head. Raisiny fruitcake aroma. Thinnish, grainy, sweet and not especially roasty compared to some of the other delights on the menu. Even Octo said too sweet. Hints of liquorice and roast as it warms up. Too sugary for me, even with this bastard of a cold.

Cask at the Ealing beer fest. Rates start getting a bit special here. How can a scumbag like that get away with sandbagging a doctor of journalism! Overly roasty porter.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Rune (4667) - Tromsø, NORWAY - MAR 20, 2008
Half on gravity at London Drinker BF 08, evening session. No head. Black body with ruby hints. The light aroma is predominantly sweet dark fruits and malt. A rather unusual taste for a porter with hop resin, dark fruits and notes of honey sweetness. Smooth bitter finish. Medium palate (12.03.2008).
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MesandSim (7108) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 14, 2008
A Mes rate: Gravicask at Sussex Beer Festival. Black as night with a thin tan head. Aroma is very sweet and topped up with cereal and some fresh unbrewed malt, very green. Flavour is better. In all hoesty this isn’t usually my thing, milky ceral and almost tea but not quite. Good malt, nice hops, well balanced, especially in the finish. Really tasty and interesting, even if my notes do make it sound crap. Much more old ale than porter by the way.
