Sample at Beerevents tasting at Veluwse Heidebrouwerij. Beer has been barrel aged on Wild Turkey barrels for six months. Clear brown appearance with a lasting light brown head. Aroma is whiskey, peat, wood, leather and dust. Taste is again whiskey, wood and peat, and also some vanilla. Beneath that hints of the original flavour like soft roasted malts and some coffee and chocolate. Wonderful beer. Carbonation is soft, there’s a nice bitter hint and dry finish. It only lacks a full body, but what can you expect from a 5,5% beer.

33cl bottle. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Roasted malts, coffee beans, cherries, bitter cherries. Soft mouthfeel for a schwarzbier. Not bad.

Dark brown color. The nose reminds me of at a cheap nightclub on a weekday to drink copious amounts JD and coke. The mouth is a bit sour and astringent and thin bodied but still not bad, with lots of bourbon character. Chocolate malts shine. Bourbon lingers in the finish. Pretty decent for 5.5%. As it warmed up I enjoyed this less and less and it became more astringent.

33cl bottle #54/732. Dark body with ruby glances againts the light, no head, oily look. Aroma has strong bourbon aroma with notes of oak. Hints of vanilla, light malt. Taste has woody sweetness with medium astringent oak bitterness. Long bourbon after taste. Good wood, but little bit overpowering the beer. Body is medium, low carbonation, oily.

33 cl bottle @ home (#293/396 - bbe 06-2014 so about time). Clear deep dark brown color with a red hue. Dense frothy beige head with pretty good retention and fair lacing. Smell of whiskey comes out immediately, but also red fruit, oak/vanilla, some roast ed malt, a little umami. Less whiskey-ish retronasal (but still so), more fruity (berries), some licorice, roasted malts. Flavor is fruity, on the verge of being sour, light sweet. Body is rather thin. Flavor disappears quite quickly with a light bitterness remaining. Pleasant and interesting, but the combination of Bourbon and Schwarz is not the bomb.

Very tasty, especially for a schwarzbier. The barrel aging gives it an extra depth and richness.

From a 330 ml bottle, at home, into a snifter. ABV 5.5% Dark brown mahogany colour on the body, with a minimal beige head, low retention and just a thin line of lacing left around the glass. Strong bourbon aromas, overpowering most of everything else, although some toasted malts and light toffee are also traceable. Taste also of bourbon mainly, toasted malts, light chocolate. Light bitterness on the aftertaste. Thin bodied, low carbonation. Overall good, in spite of the low alcohol and the thin body
