COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A beast of a brew. This dark, rich hearty ale is made with shiitake mushrooms, adding umami soaked earthiness unique to this beer. Brewed with a balanced blend of roasted barley and oats, the mouthfeel is truly narrative. Both complex and straight-forward, this ale is equally at home with a hearty fresh off the grill steak or a late night game of poker.

Bottle. Pours a dark bruin body with a tan off white head with thin lacing. I’m not sure i get the mushroom character here, seems a bit dusky earth like in nature. What i get is really more malty, roasted malt, toasted oats, hints of chocolate. Bitter with licorice, tea like bitterness, and a hint of musky coco to finish. Not bad.

courtesy of googzoid10, many thanks for sending all these WA gems. 22oz bomber, pours brown, mocha head. Light golden lacing. aroma is malty with roasted coffee scents. Aroma also has this earthly/moss sort that anyone who went mushroom picking would know what I am trying to describe. It’s mild and not overpowering. flavors, grainy and malty, some bitter coffee/chocolate, thick mouthfeel. As the beer warms up, I got a lot more mocha goodness with a thick earthly mouthfeel reminiscent of mushroom that is somewhat similar to aroma. Some faint bitterness of hops, mostly balanced out by the chocolate and coffee. This is tasty, need to seek out more Epic Ales, these guys surely brew some interesting beers.

Bottle that Shawn shared with me, thanks: Close to mahogany hue with a small lasting frothy head which produced very good lace. The aroma has notes of smoked meat, chocolate, walnuts, roast, very earthy and slightly herbal as well with a hint pf pepper and ash. I really like the nose on this beer, pretty complex... then there was the taste, starts okay enough with chocolate and nutty tones but then a veggie, fishy and musty overtone took over and ruined it for me. Guess I do not like mushrooms in my beer? Just taste dirty and unrefined. The mouth feel is smooth and ashy, a bit thin bodied as well. Starts great then petered out badly, still nice to try once.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a murky and somewhat grainy very dark brown. Dense, creamy, surging moussy head. Nice toasted caramel, wet earth, and tangy mushroom nose. Creamy medium body with pleasant carb. Beautifully balanced body--not at all heavy but has some density and savoriness to it, with the carb providing just the right structural balance. Earth, toast, nuts, caramel, and that vaguely gamey mushroom note on the mid palate. Maybe a hint of chocolate way in the background. Clean dry finish. Great beer.

[3414-20101002] 1pt6floz bottle. Roasted dark wood forest aroma has mild dry bark sticks. Dark brown body with a quick foamy light brown head. Earthy dry wood roast flavour has a long lingering smoky roast malt aftertaste. Full body. Sneakily quite boozy.

Received 22-oz bottle via trade with 5000. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with plenty of particles in the beer, yet holds a beige head that dissipates to a fine film top. Aroma of Shiitake mushrooms, some oysters in a shell, earthy herbs, and a hint of chocolate malt. Taste is medium to full bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of chocolate malt, floral hops and some dried Shiitake mushrooms. Finish is malty with plenty of floral hops with not so much bitterness.

(22oz bottle thanks to BMan1113VR) clear dark brown with ring of tan bubbles. Nose of mushroom, earth, brown sugar. Taste of roasty brown sugar, cream, coffee with a nicely carbonated roasty finish.

Bottle:   Deep brown, very dark, nearly black, loads of sediment on the bottom of the glass, moderate beige head, very little lacing.   Earthy roasted malt nose.   Could be mushrooms I suppose.   Just seems rather earthy to me.   Lactose sweetness otherwise.   Smidgen of coffee bean.   Smooth roasted malt flavor up front, very Sweet Stout like.   Backside has a bit of a grape popsicle stick... odd.   As it warms I get some charred wood or campfire.   Remains very earthy from start to finish.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Flavorful, but not heavy.   Interesting to say the least, and a bit different.
