The first sip of this brilliant, red-brown beer reveals a robust mouth feel and complex flavors including raisin, dark bread, some sherry flavors sure to increase with age, resin hops, a touch of old barrel. With the finish comes the aroma and flavor of Columbus hops in your mouth, being followed by the alcohol warmth that can be felt down your throat.

22 oz. bottle, pours a dark caramel orange amber with a small head. Aroma brings out toasted chestnuts, spicy hops, and a touch of caramel bready malt. Flavour is very similar, with lots of spice, toasted nuts, and dry dark fruits. Too spicy and nutty for a barley wine. Acceptable, but off the mark for me.

Release #14 brewed in Denver 10.4% bottle poured a clear brown hue w/ small tight beige head, minor lacing. Big sweet boozy aroma. Initial flavor moderate sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish. Tastes are rum soaked raisins, dark bread, and some piney hop. Full bodied, soft carbonation, big warmth in the finish.

Pours a dirty amber color. Aroma is raison, breadiness, earthy hops, and some toffee. Taste is much the same, very balanced with almost no heat. Hides the alcohol well. I’d like to get some more and age it!

Bottle from Total wine Mclean. Pours brown with a thin khaki head. definitely get raisin on the nose. A bit smoother than others of this style. Hides the alcohol fairly well. Definitley get the hoppiness but also a kind of prune/raisin thing on the tongue. finish lingers a bit which you’d expect. Not a big fan of the style but Epic usually brings it at a high level so this is kind of nice.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle. Aroma of toffee, raisins, citrus and caramel. Taste of toffee, currants, caramel, citrus, raisins and mild earthy hops. Medium/full body and medium/high carbonation. Quite hop forward, but with enough hops to give it complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Yellow Ape Craft. Nose features a big attack of spiced fruit, including dates, berries, and peach puree. Fresh and near pungent. Dark tea color. Initial is concentrated caramel / fruit cake, light spice, and sugar dust / finish is tingling and bitter. Medium-heavy body. Seems like a caramel bomb at first, but isn’t quite so overpowering later on. But packed with great flavors.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed on my AZ trip last week. The appearance had a light somewhat clear brown color. bar pour leads to a half finger white foamy head, adequate light foamy lacing. The smell had a llight caramel maltiness leading into an inviting raisinous and also bitter citrusy hoppiness. The taste was bitter and sweet at different times through the caramel malts and raisins to mix with the bitter citrusy hops. not much of an aftertaste, in fact I really don’t get anything, sweet dry finish. On the palate, it sat at/about a medium on the palate. not really sessionable, but its a barleywine so whaddaya expect. The carbonation is good for the style and for me. Overall, this was a good barleywine that I would have again, slightly hoppier than some so that makes me think its an American one.

24 oz. bomber from Wilbur’s. Appearance: Finger of tight light brown head, deep copper red, clear, head does not last too long, good lacing. Aroma:pine, floral, roast malt, heavy caramel, earthy hops but not dank. Palate: full body, alcoholic texture, lasting bitter finish, soft carbonation. Taste: sweet malt that lasts for a good while, then transitions to an almost subtle hoppiness and finally a solid bitter, alcohol shows through. Overall, very nice, the alcohol is actually very enjoyable in this, even though it shows through, balance is great. I want to age one or two of these.

That term “classic barley wine,” hard to find in these times of hop dominance (not that I’m complaining) & to avoid the truly British barley wines. Aroma of peaches, alcohol, toffee. In the flavor that candy sugar, a hint of those orange marshmallow peanuts, stark hops bitterness just showing up occasionally like a barracuda. Well-balanced weight & flow. Clear orange amber with modest tan head.
