Pours a deep maroon with off white head. Nose and taste are still dominated be the American style hops. A nice malty sweetness supports the hops nicely. Very well balanced, the singularity in the hop keeps it from being exceptional.

My first barley wine experience. A great half and half of dry, sweet red wine and hoppy bitterness. Big, warming flavor thanks to over 10% ABV.

Bottle, I got this as part of a trade back in April 2011. Held onto it for a bit to let it mature. It was good, poured a nice cloudy brown. Very sweet, brown sugar, candy flavors. Smooth, easy to drink, not too boozy, though I’m feeling it after the fact.

Moderately dark color, clear. Some hop notes to the aroma but the overwhelmingly character is malty, with bread and caramel. It builds in sweetness to the finish; appropriate for a barley wine, though those looking for a DIPA on steroids wouldn’t care for it as much. Decent. (bottle at the Ale Jail backyard beer festival, 2012)

Bottle. Pours a very hazy dark amber color with a moderate head to it. Very alcohol laden aroma, like a stronger mixed drink. Tastes like it is barrel-aged. Really interesting brew.

22oz bottle from Dutch’s Bar & Bottle Shop in Cincinnati, OH. Release #5, 10.5% ABV. Pours a cloudy orange-amber colored body with a finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is fairly sweet, but well hopped with lots of resiny, pineapple and candied grapefruit hops. A definite sherry essence with some raisin dark fruits, esters, florals, and a light breadiness to a medium sweet caramel. Flavor is similar. Sweet caramels up front with some fairly bitter and resiny, pineapple and grapefruit florals and grass. Slightly boozy sherry note throughout, a touch of bread, and a light dark fruit note. Finishes sweet, but bitter and dry with a light wood note to the big, resiny hops. Lengthy aftertaste with some alcohol warmth following a medium, creamy body and a soft, medium-light carbonation. Overall, a really nice barley wine. Sweet, but not cloying and plenty of fresh, resiny hops to balance. Nice sherry and dark fruit note with a pleasant alcohol warmth that never gets too boozy. Good one.

A - Pours a cloudy amber-brown color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel and caramelized malts with some brown sugar with a bit of booze.
T - Starts off with a mix of sweet caramel malts and caramelized sugars with some brown sugar. Through the middle, some grapefruit and pineapple hops come through with some bitterness. The finish is a mix of sweet caramel malts and grapefruit hops and bitterness with some brown sugar and a bit of booze.
M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet, bitter, and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. Nice malt and hop balance with good hop bitterness and body to balance.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ocean82 (77) - Virginia, USA - JUL 13, 2012
Poured from 750mL bottle into wine glass. Pours hazy orange amber with a thin head but lots of lacing. Smells of caramel, brown sugar, with a hint of flowery hops. Flavors of malt and sugar dominate with some florals and a touch of bitter hops. Low carbonation and creamy mouthfeel with a slightly bitter and boozy finish. My first barely wine review.
--- Cheers
