In the beginning, there was Armageddon. Then an impish brewer put the beer in new oak barrels to age it for 8 weeks. This was to reproduce the original IPA of the 18th century. It may be too huge for this fragile planet so enjoy this beer like it was the last one on Earth.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2012 500ml bottle, best before date of 02.08.12. This worried me at first, until I remembered that NZ uses the DD/MM/YY date format. It’s also been refrigerated since I acquired it in January. Anyway: Nose of citric, spicy hop, strong oak, vanilla, very faint pale malt sweetness and touches of white wine, pineapple and leafy herb. Mostly clear bright golden yellow color, with a lasting, uneven head. Initial pour was sparklingly clear, but as I topped the glass off later, a small swirl of sediment appeared. Flavor profile is hoppy, woody and generously bitter up front, with suggestions of lightly tannic oak, pine, peach and vanilla, finishing dry and hoppy with touches of lemon, pear, very faint malt and white wine (Nelson Sauvins perhaps?). Active, almost sharp carbonation on the palate, dry and very drinkable with a medium body. I wasn’t sure about this at first, the oak is really pretty hefty and this has a definite twang to it. But as it warmed and I drank further, I started to find some complexity, it started to come together better and I started to get really interested. Ultimately, I would certainly recommend it, but not for the faint of heart or palate.

500ml bottle. This one was not as big and bold as I expected it to be however it was still very good. Shimmery hazy golden amber colour with a softish sand coloured head. Big full in your face hop aroma gets the senses going. Long lasting aftertaste is almost medicinal and vinegary tart. For value for money I believe that Epic’s Armeggedon IPA is better value. This still hits the spot though and it is quite a good beer.

Wonderful drinking IPA. Nothing special looking, a little head on yellow coloured body. More wood than hop aroma. Smooth mouthfeel, great drinkability. The hoppiness was there, it was terrifically well rounded. Bottle from Premiere Gourmet, thanks for picking up Jon.

Bottle from Star Grocery. Pours dark golden with a thin off-white head and a musty oak aroma. There is a slightly astringent citrus flavor over a heavy caramel malt background with a hint of tropical fruit. There is a sharply bitter finish. Quite complex for an IPA.
