4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 21, 2015 Release #34. Brewed on December 11, 2013. Packaged September 19, 2014. ABV: 12.7%. Served into a Tulip from bottle.
Aroma -- slightly boozy aroma w/ hints of chocolate and medium-roast coffee.
Appearance -- black, thick, medium-bodied stout w/ minimal head-retention. Khaki colored head.
Taste -- as always, Big Bad Baptist is delightful: rich dark chocolate malt w/ subtle coffee and cocoa nibs and tolerable barrel on after-tone, which almost creates a vanilla-like sensation.
Palate -- more boozy than Release 20, but maintains integrity of cocoa nibs, coffee, and chocolate through each and every sip.
Overall -- an outstanding Imperial Stout that I will continue to purchase annually. Dessert in a glass.
Release #20. Brewed on August 14, 2013. Packaged October 29, 2013. ABV: 10.5%. Served into a Tulip from bottle next to Release #34. This one has been aging since 8/14/13; today is 12/13/14.
Aroma -- slightly more pronounced aroma: no booziness emanating from glass, chocolate is more evident w/ minimal coffee smell.
Appearance -- pitch black, thicker than #34, medium-bodied stout w/ minimal head-retention. Slightly darker khaki colored head than #34.
Taste -- this brew has matured well over the past ~15 months. This release is truly creamier. The coffee, chocolate, and cocoa nibs were blended more harmoniously in this batch than in #34.
Palate -- less boozy than Release #34, but explores palate more adventurously than #34. Engulfs palate aggressively in many respects.
Overall -- phenomenal, like Release #34, just slightly more enjoyable in respect to my taste.
Rating is 4.3 for #34 and 4.4 for #20.

Thick dark black pour with no head. Smells like cocoa and coffee beans. Not much alcohol smell at all. Big thick mouthfeel. Tastes like a chocolate covered espresso bean. Minor hints of whiskey. No alcohol taste. Terrific beer!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On a flight at Aces and Ales in Vegas. Pours a thick black with a small beige head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate cocoa nibs, vanilla, roasted malts. The taste was delicious with the chocolate nibs and dark chocolate dominant, vanilla, caramel, and coffee. Thick mouth, velvety. Chocolate and coffee finish. Not boozy.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Release #37. Bottle. Pours an opaque black with a smooth, creamy, lacy, fine-grained tan head. Nose is not at ALL sweet -- coffee, dust, earth, mushrooms, unsweetened chocolate, and smoke. Almost no sweetness on the tongue as well; this one’s about the structure of roasted malt and whiskey aging unsullied by sweetness, and it’s like being hit around the head and ears with an espresso machine. Big, intense, and brooding, but well-integrated and flavorful with a lot of layers to it; roast nuts, smoked meat, coffee, chocolate, spice, and even a little pepper. Finish is creamy and smooth, with leather and tobacco. Most impressive.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber into snifter, Release #32, 10.7% ABV. Dark with no head, although it leaves mocha lacing on the glass. Aroma is bitter chocolate and coffee, first sip is coffee and chalky bitter chocolate. Some warming in the throat. I wouldn’t say that anything else really comes into play. After 15 minutes, finally first notes of peat come in. After a while the coffee aroma comes to dominate. More vigorous second pour yields more robust, fine-bubbled head. This is a good beer, but for me the whiskey barrel did little or nothing.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle to glass. Pours a deep black color with a creamy brown head. Aroma is spicy, light coffee, dark roasted coffee, burnt malts. Flavor is more burnt roast malts, coffee, a bit astringent. Can’t say I pick up much on the bourbon barrel in the aroma or flavor. Medium to heavy body with a thick creamy mouthfeel. Lingering burnt coffee bitterness in the finish. Tasty beer. Would get even better marks if the bourbon barrel was a little more forward.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours jet black with a dark khaki head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee with a little alcohol smell also. Thick like cough syrup. Taste of chocolate, coffee, bourbon and licorice. Big huge beer. 13% alcohol. A definite sipper. Very good overall. More alcohol warmth as the beer warms.
